im starting Accutane tomrorow! im so excited! is there anything I should know before I start? that is, everything in stock on, etc? Thanks!
Reply:since as I said my initial course 2 years ago only worked for 6 months, Im considering doing it again.
Although im not sure if I can put my life on hold like that again plus im scared of the initial break out, my break out was worse than anything ive ever had, maybe bout 4 giant cysts but they last for months and the red marks over a year, now im left with scars.
My acne is moderate now, mosty get concerned with my body where i get a cyst here and there but not too widespread, ive always got a few on my face but not so bad
What you guys think?
Reply:NO Accutane does NOT help with the scarring/red marks. Those will go away on there own!
The red marks and scars are (obviously) left over from the pimples. Once the pimples are gone, the red marks and scarring SLOWLY start to fade.
Reply:well i dont have scarring really, just red marks. so i wonder if it will help with that?

Reply:I am 44 years old. I was on Accutane 14 years ago. Two separate doses of it. I could write a book on that stuff. Don't take this lightly. Be very certain that you've tried everything else before going on Accutane. Sounds like I have a horror story to tell. But really not.
It worked for me the second time around. I don't really have time to go into all the side effect I got but as it's been pointed out, everyone's different.
Regarding the scarring. I've had deep pitted scarring most of my acne life. I had cystic postulis acne. The worst kind because it leaves scarring. The second dose of Accutane completely got rid of the acne. I now get about 1 or 2 pimples on my chin at period time and that's OK with me. I do however still experience one or two bad episodes a year – in the same place. But I've recently found out that it's because I have a sebaciious cyst. It will keep recurring unless I have it removed.
Anyway back to the scarring. No it will not reduce your current scarring. I will stop further scarring but will not repair the scarring you currently have before Accutane.
As I've said – make sure you're ready for Accutane. It's a very strong serious drug. Follow your doctor's advice. And once you start it, follow the whole dose. And keep posting on this site. It's a wonderful resource and support group.
Hope that helps

Reply:my skin didnt really get that dry if i can remember right, I was on it for 4 or 5 months, my initial break out was kinda bad, left my scarred for a while and ive still got kinda indented scars tbh, dont let this discourage you though cause everyone is different, just be prepared for a break out.
Roaccutane kept me completely acne free for maybe 6 months and now its been back for 2 years, again though, im in the minority, for most it doesnt come back I think.
Good luck!
Reply:ur lips will get dry as hell, make sure your always carrying lip balm – sorry if someone has already said this
Reply:hey so does anyone else have any experience with how scars (or red marks) can diminish if you get your active acne under control?
Reply:i was wondering the same thing. i really bad want to go on it. but my concerns are: money? how much for how long? and the other concern isi have to wear make up to school. but im scared that my skin will be so dry that my makeup wont work. and ill be constantly dry. im not too worried abotu my lips being dry but my skin is so random its very oily and then randomly dry. The other concern is tha ti dont have acne really bad. Its really red and i have black head/bumps around my t-zone. But around my cheeks and neck its all clear. so i want to know if accutane is for me. I know my acne is not going away anytime soon so i might as well try it. let me know what you think. thanks in advance! -grace
Reply:does anyone else have an experience w/ accutane helping/hurting scarring (that was present before)?
Reply:I understand that Proactive works for some people. The lucky ones I assume. All I can say is if you have sensitive skin, stay away from proactive!!! It ruined my skin in 7th grade, then again when I was 20-21, thinking it would be different the second time around. It's so harsh on your skin you better make sure your skin can handle it! I was broken out horribly for a year and I was only on Proactive maybe a couple months tops. I was not broken out THAT BAD before going on Proactive! They don't let the consumers know how harsh it really is, and it's not for sensitive skin!
Reply:Your skin definitely heals faster. I was only on Accutane for one cycle. I probably could have been on another. But I'm glad I wasn't as the mood swings etc..
Anyways that was like 5 or 6 years ago. Now I'm in college and I do have some blemishes and the occasional pimple from time to time but my whole face looks very good. I have been using ProActiv For about 3 or more years now and that definitely helps the healing process after you get through with Accutane. I recommend using that later.
Reply:well it turns out i was wrong, and i have to wait 30 days to prove i am on birth control or something…so yeah…
but for those on accutane, did you found it helped at all w/ the scarring? or to word it differently, once your skin stopped breaking out, did you find that your body could heal the scars better?
thanks!
Reply:i am starting accutane this week too! thanks to the above for the tips. Also how long does it take for the intitial break out to rear its ugly head?
All I have to say is moisturize, moisturize, moisturize.
Some people don't necessarily get an initial breakout. I never had one (thank god) but was expecting it. Good luck!
Reply:well i am only 5 days in and i just woke up with new pimples.. some people dont get one so it all depends. and i have heard it can last a week to like 2 months. hopefully its not too long. good luck

Accutane is actually a very dangerous drug. It has been linked to all kinds of health issues in people (even 10 years past when they took the drug).
You should really focus more on the underlying cause of your acne, not just using drugs like Accutane to try and hide the symptoms. Symptoms will always come back if you never treat the cause of the disease.
I would say you should not even take Accutane.
