My doctor suggests proactive. I do not want to waste time and money if it is not. Thank you!
Reply:Sleepy210…..what cleansers do you say are better than the renewing cleanser? Why/How does the toner close your comedones?
Reply:You can make your own Proactiv treatment for much cheaper. It's obviously not the exact same, but if money is an issue, it's worth a shot.
1)The first step in Proactiv is a daily cleanser with salicylic acid. You can find plenty of cleansers with salicylic acid in it at your local drug store.
2)The second step is a toner with glycolic acid. You can find those at your drug store as well in a variety of concentrations.
3)Third step is treating with benzoyl peroxide. Also, at your drug store.
Try it and let us know if it works just as good as Proactiv.
YOU TRY IT and YOU let US know if it works!!! Since you suggested it and all.

Reply:The toner like sat on my face and created a film that just caused closed comedones all over. The repairing lotion has worked the best for me. The renewing cleanser works ok too, but there's better stuff than the cleanser out there. The best is the lotion, that's the only thing from Proactiv that I use.
Reply:Wow!! All of you have been so knowledgeable and helpful to me. I hope that I will be one of the lucky ones who is helped by Proactive and that it does not stop working. Thanks again!!
Reply:Like a lot of the posts I am current using proactiv. I have been using it for two months and only a few days ago have I seen that my mild to moderate acne is noticably going away, even my strange cysts are tiny now almost gone. At first I was disappointed to see it wasn't doing very much but I'm a bit more hopeful now. I'm ordering my next supply and I'm not using anything else while it arrives. Like everyone else, I too would say to try it just remember that for some people it clears them up right away and for others it can take a lot longer.
Reply:I've used Proactive and it really cleared up my mild acne. However, once I ran out, I decided to save money (a penny saved is a penny earned) and use a less expensive Proactive equivalent which is Neutrogena's Pore Refining System. It's a cleanser, toner, and moisturizer.
There are 3 reasons why Proactiv work, which are the same three reasons why the Neutrogena Pore Refining system works just as good. Those three reasons are:
1. The cleanser should be a gentle exfoliant.
2. The toner should contain Glycolic Acid
3. Well, the moisturizer should meet your skins needs so it could be a combination skin moisturizer, a hydrating moisturizer for dry skin, or and acne preventing moisturizer.
Reply:I used it for about 1 1/2 years but found the BP too harsh on my skin. I'd be as red as a tomato! I just stay away from BP products now. It's all trial and error though, it could work great for you.
Reply:Yes, it is BP. There is no salicylic in any of their products.
I used it and it worked wonders for 3 months. I even stopped my antibiotics and I was almost clear. Then it completely stopped working. That is worse than having something not work at all. You get your hopes up that it is gone and then it comes right back even worse. At the end it seemed that my skin looked more oily too. I was patient with it. I kept with it for about 3 more months after it stopped working and it just continued to get worse.
BTW. Proactiv does have a stronger concentration of BP available. It is 7.5% instead of 2.5%. They don't advertise it. Even one of the Proactiv operators told me they didn't have it when I asked about it then I called right back and ordered it from someone else. I should get it in the next few days. I just have to wait for my Differin to stop drying me out so much then I can add it to the mix. I'll post again to tell what happens. 4/27
Reply:Proactiv's cleanser contains Benzoyl Peroxide… not SA. :p

Reply:"The main problems with is that your skin will build tolerance for it fast."
This seemed to be true for me too. I used it for about a year and my skin really cleared up. But then back in December, I broke out and the Proactiv seemed to just quit on me. Finally, in February, I started using Cetaphil sensitive cleanser and that worked wonders! I have sensitive skin so products with Salicydic acid or benzoyal peroxide often make the problem worse for me. I recently found out that now Proactiv has a gentle cleanser but I haven't tried it yet.
Reply:I've used Proactive. It's okay for the first 2-3 months.
The main problems with is that your skin will build tolerance for it fast. Their main ingredient that is suppose to help your acne is salicylic acid.It becomes overdrying and the texture of your skin will become rough.
I recommend Burt's Bees products. Try using the Lettuce Bar WITH the Wild Lettuce Toner. It's gentle and has been very effective for me. The toner hydrates my face and it has also made it less oily.
Reply:I have a friend who has used Proactive before and it helped her, but I have never tried it. There is an over the counter product called Klear Action that I recently bought at a drug store and they compare it to Proactive. I guess it's the cheaper version of it. I am going to start using it.
Reply:I tried it and it worked for me… but the downfall was that i had to have a credit card and they billed you a shipment every month. I couldn't afford it plus I had extra skin care products that I didn't need…
I believe its every 3 months. BTW (not trying to correct you, just clearifying for anyone wanting to purchase.)

Reply:I recently started back on it a few weeks ago, and my face is looking great. Redness gets pretty faded using it too. Just make sure you use it exactly how they say on instructions. I overused it before and it jacked my skin up. But id say give it a try, take a little over a week and you should notice a diff…notice slight diff. even before that. Give it a try.
Reply:Proactiv works for a lot of people and doesn't work for a lot of people. Everything, as much as it sucks, is trial and error. I used Proactiv and it cleared my skin up a lot. Although my face wasn't completely clear, it was a heck of a lot better than it was before using the products. It might work for you but there is no guarantee. If you do decide to try it, stick with it for at least 3 or 4 months.

Proactiv worked for a little bit, but once your skin grows tolerance to the chemicals, it stops working, at least it did for me. If you have mild to moderate acne, it might work for you. If you have severe acne problems, it might work to a certain point, but won’t actually clear up your face.
