Hi, am planning to start
I BCP to control acne again, wonder you girls can share the brands of BCP, and you take the consequences? (Especially on the first breakouts, weight gain)
I was on Diane-35 for 6 months and stopped because I balooned approximately 3 kg in 6 months .
Thanks!
Reply:Hehe….
Sorry for the late response, but I truly appreciate your replies.
For me, balooning 3kg is a HUGE thing, since I was so used to be describe as skinny as chopstick…. and the problem is, all the weights seems to grow only on tummy!!!
Anyway, thanks for all the information, now I have a few more brands to suggest to my GP.
Reply:Ah yes….what a hoot it was when a nurse at my gyno told me to quit stuffing my face if I wanted to stop gaining weight. I told her all I was eating was bread and water by that point. Shut her up quick.
Granted, the pill effects your appetite and therefore if you eat more, you will gain weight. It also effects you with water retention. Hormones in general will effect your body – I gained over 50 lbs during my pregnancy – and trust me, I was NOT eating like a slobbery glutten. And 25 of those pounds were gained in my FIRST trimester….it was par for the course for me to gain 15-20 lbs on birth control pills that I had only been taking for only 2 or 3 months. All I can say is that the weight fell off after I stopped taking the hormones. Everyone's body is different.
Reply:I would venture to say that you may have gained a few pounds of water weight. 5-8 pounds is one thing, but people who claim they gained 20-30 pounds due to the pill is simply because they eat too much.

I respectfully disagree. When I gained weight on the BCPs (and 8-10 lbs is a significant amount to gain, for me), I did not eat more nor exercise less. It was the added hormones and estrogen that affected my body this way. My ob/gyn acknowledges this fact.

Reply:I have been on Yasmin for about 4 months now and it has completely cleared my skin up. I had an initial break out period, but I am not sure if it was from the pill because I started Differin at the same time, which also starts that.

Reply:OTC, Loestrin, Mircette, and Yasmin here.
Only one that kept the weight off and acne under control was Yasmin – unfortunately after 3 months I experienced weird arm pains and numbness in my hand and foot. Then came the horrible panic attacks. After the 8th pill on my 4th pack – I quit. Hope it works better for you if you try it.
Reply:I started out on Yasmin, then went to Ortho Cyclen, and then I was put on Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo. I don't think I was on Yasmin long enough for it to do anything for my skin, but my skin looks a lot better now than it did a couple years ago. I still get a couple pimples here and there, but the overall tone is better and I don't get as many pimples as I used to. I didn't gain any weight on any of them.. actually I've lost three pounds in the past year without going on any sort of diet or exercising. Are you sure the 3 kg you gained are from the pill? I mean that's not a lot of weight (certainly not "ballooning"), and it was over 6 months.
Reply:First, please remember that BCPs can affect each woman's body very differently!
I've been on the following:
OTC
Mircette
Loestrin
Yasmin.
I've switched from all because I gained weight from all of them. None of them helped my skin except for the Yasmin, but I did have an initial breakout period the first month.
Now I'm starting OTC-LO. It contains about half the hormones of the original OTC. It's only the first week, but so far my skin still looks great and no weight gain!!
You can try going to http://www.wdxcyber.com/ncontr13.htm, which gives a great rundown and comparison of many of the different BCPs out there. I hope giving this website is okay with the moderator, because it is not actually selling anything – it's merely giving valuable information.

Reply:I've been on depo-provera for 3 years and it doesn't help my acne but I love it so much a little acne is worth it. I never ever have my period, and it is 99.996% effective in preventing pregnancy (and believe me I've tested that out…) I am worry free. I can't bring myself to take the pill because my own brother is a result of the pill not working, even when taken correctly!
Other side effects, maybe moodyness, and I lost 20 pounds (over about 6 mos- year) not sure if it had to do with this, but it happened right after, and i didn't change anything about my eating/excircise habits! I eat everything and I never exercise, and I weigh 114 pounds… (5'2")
I had acne before I was on it, and I was on orthotricyclin for about 2 months before depo and that helped take my acne away, but when I went on the shot, I think it just came back.

Reply:i just started taking ortho cyclen i haven't had any weird side effects and i hoping it will clear up my face pretty good. i haven't broke out so far. i was wondering if a 21 day pack is better for acne than a 28 day pack!?!
Reply:Week 16 of yasmin….so far so good. Not 100% clear, but I would say I'm better from taking this pill. I take them daily at bedtime and only take active pills and then go right on to the next pack.
Side effects: Breast tenderness and much enlargement. Slight weight gain…from about 98 to 107 now. No nausea noted, no fatigue other than usual. I don't have a cycle any longer so I can't relate to how it affects periods.

Reply:i finished my first month of Nordette (made by Wyeth ayerst in the US) and i have had zero side effects. My acne is the same, so is my weight, etc, etc, which i'll take any day over bad side effects. But who knows, maybe in the coming months, i'll see some differences.
Reply:I've used Orthotricyclen, Ortho Evra, and now I'm on Orthotricyclen Lo. OTC and OTC Lo have really helped clear my skin up. Ortho Evra made me break out even worse. I never had any weight gain from either of these, and no side effects.
