I heard girls say this desert in another post and was wondering if it was a side effect everyone had, or like the others it was rare and was dependent on the individual person?
Reply:Had to reply – I've had eczema since childhood (just turned 40) and it's a genetic-heriditary skin problem. Certain things (ie: raw meat, perfumed soaps, gasoline, certain laundry detergents, etc) can "trigger" a reaction. Mine is usually worse in the fall/winter months, due to lack of moisture in the air. (live on northern east coast) But, it's something – that I've always had, on & off for years. I don't think it's something that you can acquire. What you'all are taking about sounds more like a dermitis – a condtion, caused by something else, hence your accutane. I've found that aloe vera lotion (@ least 85% – aloe) works for me, I buy it @ a vitamin store. It says for extremely dry skin. Aloe is a wonderful "natural healer"….Just thought, I would add my 2 cents, -Shinyornament
Reply:Aquaphor isn't by prescription. Just visit your local drugstore they should have it.
Reply:Wow, that AQUAPHOR sounds very promising, i use carmex on my lips every hour, and they still bleed quite a bit from being very dry. Is it percription?
Reply:guy,
I'm on the same month as you, and have been having the exact same problems and it started in, and spread to the same areas, i notice your post is a little older, and i was wondering if you could give me an update if you have finished it now?
Thanks.
I'm still on Accutane, and will be for a little less than two more montsh believe it or not, which will mean that i will be on it for a total of around 8 months.
As for the eczema, my derm gave me some strong cortizone ointment and i tried that, but results were slow, so i tried putting a decent amount of good moisturizer (vasaline intensive care) all over my arms once a day before i go to bed, and it cleared up within a couple days! i just keep putting some on every night and i haven't had any. Now, however, i am getting dry, burning eyes, and actually am having a hard time focusing and my vision seems blurry at long distances, i;m thinking (and hoping) that it's just because my eyes are dry because when i use lots of visine, my vision gets less blurry, so i don't think i have to worry about it too much.
Also! For those of you looking for something for extremely dry, cracked, lips, try AQUAPHOR! My pharmacist mixed me up some behind the counter for free and told me to let him know if it works, and i have to say that it's the best stuff i've ever used. I put it on at night (and throughout the day) and when i wake up like 8 hours later, my lips actually aren't dry and cracked! Ask your pharmacist/derm about it and try it! Trust me!

Reply:I think a lot of people are a little misinformed on what eczema is. There is a difference between eczema and dry skin. The Accutane does cause very dry skin, and I think people are just calling it eczema, when its not. When you get eczema, your skin is dry (the same as when you take Accutane), but it just gets dry on its own, without any contributing factors. The only real difference between the two is that the dry skin caused by Accutane can be eliminated with regular moisturizers, while eczema usually can?t.
Yes, you are correct….HOWEVER, it can work the other way as well, exzema can be caused by severely dry skin. For example, i have had pretty dry skin on my face since i started taking accutane, but after upping my dose yet again for two weeks, on night i was just studying at my desk and i suddenly became very itchy all over my elbows/arms and a rash comprised of tiny red bumps and large red, rcusty circles begam to spread rapidly covering my arms from the back of my hands, all the way up to, and including my lower neck. THIS is NOT just dry skin, it is eczema, which, in my case, and probably some others on accutane, was most likely caused by dry skin.
I now use a Rx cortisone ointment which keeps it pretty much under control, except for a breakout now and then…i'm hoping these will subside after my cycle of accutane is over…

Reply:I took a 6 month course of accutane and never got it.
Reply:i've been on accutane for about 5 months now and i just started getting eczema aboput a 3 weeks ago…it first started on my elbows (usually the dryest part fo my body anyways…) but it slowly spread all over my arms and now a little on my neck….it gets itches when i excercise….but meh. It's not THAT bad, i just hoep it goes away after i'm off accutane…
Reply:It's not that bad, you just have to use moisturizer. I noticed that I did get really itchy while exercising and it did bother me, but using moisturizer sure did help alot with that. It is only caused by the dry skin you get while on accutane as long as you moisturizer it really isn't that bad.
