New Regime – words of encouragement [ortho tricycline] [birth control pills]

Jun 24, 2010

Ive started a new system about 2 1 / 2 weeks ago. Heres my system:

AM: Wash face with Cetaphil Cleanser
Apply Derma Fusion toner on my face that salicylic acid, alpha hodroxy acids, and glycolic acid. Leave on the face. Duac
Then I apply to my face and let on.

PM: Wash face with Cetaphil Cleanser
Apply Derma Fusion Toner
Every other night apply Retin-A Micro

Also started contraceptive pills at the same time.

I took Yasmine, but too many negative side effects.

Im posting because I want a few words of encouragement. I see improvement, but still cystic acne on my neck. Is there an initial breakout period that I should just wait and be patient? Any answers would be appreciated. Thank you. :)

Reply:Kitti, Do you fight with cysts alot? I get them on my neck occasionally too. right now I am broke out the worse I prolly ever have and is a month and 1/2 of me trying Ortho Tri Cyclen Lo, Is there suppost to be a initial break out period? I dont even know if BC helps Cystic acne, I mean I guess it would sinse all ance is hormone caused. What do you know? who perscribed it for you? How bad is your cystic ance and where most of the time? mine arent huge but they arent small either. I feel so depressed right now. Im interested in the cleaning reg you are talking about as well.

Thanks

Lkk2507,

I never got cystic acne until about 6 months ago. I am 34 years old and it has been a struggle. I get the cystic acne mainly on my neck. I went to my Ob/Gyn last night. She said that if I had an initial break out period it would have happened in the first month. By the way, I have been taking Ortho Tricyclen for approximately a month. She said it should not get worse from here.
I went to the website for Ortho Tricyclen. The website indicated that Ortho Tricyclen has been proven to effectively treat acne. However, they also said that Ortho Tricyclen Lo has not. The website stated it has to do with the fact that there is a lower amount of estrogen in the pill which somehow is not has effective in treating acne. I have read a lot of posts that women have taken Ortho Tricyclen Lo and did not get satisfactory results. I would suggest trying Ortho Tricyclen instead for your acne. It may help. Birth control if it is effective is supposed to treat all acne, including cystic. Has everything to do with adjusting your hormones. My Ob/Gyn said not to give up on this pill until I have been taking for 3 months, then we would evaluate my progress on it.
The cleaning regime I am on was prescribed by my dermatologist. I like the fact that it is simple. A lot of people on these posts sometimes have such complicated cleaning routines that I feel overwhelmed. I also get depressed about my acne. I know what you are feeling. It definitely effects your self-esteem and confidence in yourself. I want to say some words of encouragement, but I know how it feels to have someone say to you it will get better and you continue to struggle with the acne. All I can say is you are not alone. I wish that there was a "live" support group in my area for acne. I would love to meet personally meet people with the same problem. Anyway, I am here if you have anymore questions.

Reply:"new regime?" for a second there, i thought kerry had won the election or something. sorry, bad joke.

Reply:guy,

Are you referring to the intial breakout period as a result of the bc you're taking? I have read throughout this board about some people experiencing initial breakouts w/bc so maybe that is what is happening to you. As far as your cleaning regime goes, I mean, if it's working for you, stick with it. Me personally, I don't see anything wrong with it. As long as it is working for you, that is all that matters. I think where a lot of people with acne mess up is when they constantly switch cleansers or their cleaning routine. I know I did!! lol But I've learned it takes time for cleansers and topicals to work. Yes, I feel there comes a time when those cleansers and topicals don't work and then you need to switch. But if it's working for me, I stick with it. I have found a cleanser now (African Black Soap) that is working great. I'm using it during these drier winter months and in the warmer months I am using the Indian Soap Auromere Ayurvedic soap. These two soaps are doing wonders for me, and I am not changing to anything else. The Indian soap kept me clear longer than anything else I have used so hopefully it will be a long-term thing using that soap. I just started the African soap last week. It seems to be doing very well!! Hopefully, I can stick with it for a while or at least until warmer weather comes.

Good luck with your routine!!!
