I came across an article that says that Sodium Lauryl Sulfate promotes acne in humans. It is used in many soaps, face and body washes, shampoos, etc. I noticed that the first ingreident mentioned in my body wash, which coincidentally (perhaps?) Is the cause of my back acne since it started around same time I started using this body wash.
Sodium Laureth Sulfate and Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate (a “cousin” of the Soduim Lauryl) are also used for similar purposes, but are probably better NOT acne.
One promote these ingredients (I forget which) is also to wash my face CETAPHIL that my dermatologist recommended! EDIT: I checked the ingredients and actually has Sodium Laureth Sulfate and Sodium Lauroyl sarcosinate not as bad as the Soduim Lauryl Sulfate. My body wash is Sodium Laureth Sulfate also.
I him to look around online for more information, but many of the websites are all about the terrible chemicals in our products and how they all cause cancer, which I think that is a tad bit overboard.
Anyone have insite?
Secrets of Elder Care
Reply:I do have oily skin, but my acne is hormonal. It seems as though a lot of websites say that SLS does aggrevate acne. SLES is safer. Supposedly.
Manufacturing Cleaning and Chemical Products
Reply:All of the sulfate based products are very similar in that they are drying agents and help to remove oil. You will see that most shampoos contain these chemicals as their base to wash the oil and styling products out of your hair. It will dry the oil on your skin which my be causing the acne. If your acne is not from oily skin then you may have a hormonal imbalance that you should have checked out. In any case, the chemical is not that harmful. Most acne washes contain much harsher drying agents.
