I am currently two 875-125 mg of amox / clavK (Augmentin) per day prescribed for my very bad sore throat (possible contamination?) 0.

my question is, I hear much talk of antibiotics prescribed for acne sufferers, so why hasnt this antibiotic that I helping my acne at all? will my acne get worse as I finish the antibiotics (for them for 10 days)? I think I do not really understand how antibiotics work in the first place so if anyone can help me with these questions would be much appreciated. There is also a special antibiotic for people with acne? The doctor made it sound like the Rx he gave me was the only kind of antibiotic, or at least the best out there.

Reply:Probably p. acnes (the bacterium responsible for acne) isn't susceptible to the drug you're taking.

Reply:Antibiotics work several ways. The most important one is to reduce the amount of bacteria in and around the hair follicle. They reduce the amount of free fatty acids in the sebum, and also reduce the inflammatory response your body has. The thing is only certain antibiotics work for certain bacteria. The one you're taking for your throat won't work for acne. It's a different bacteria.

I don't see how taking the antibiotic for your throat could make your acne worse. That shouldn't be a concern.

I am thinking of going on a birth control to see if that can not balance my hormones and clear my acne. I have been on depo it horrible, Ortho Tri cyclen who did nothing as well made, and I was wondering what is the best type of acne patients not bad hormone make your hurt go ya

Reply:i use ortho-evra–the patch and it cleared up my face about 75 percent–only thing is that the side effects of the patch lasted about 6-7 weeks

Reply:Every bcp has the chance of causing acne. Everyone responds differently to hormones but since Yasmin is anti-androgen and has a high amount of estrogen, it is very unlikely to cause acne but rather help it. I have been to the Yasmin site and I thought I remembered it saying that it helps acne not causes it, but I guess it might say that it could cause it somewhere also.

Reply:I saw on the website for Yasmin that one of the side effects was acne?! How does that measure up?!? Especially since I have been hearing such great things? Does it mean only in the first few months and then you will clear your existing acne? I am so confused! Diane-35 looked like the way to go until I heard it had a really bad rap as far as clotting and not being safe, it seemed like it was a wonderful thing. HMMMM, please answer me somebody.

Reply:I'm just finishing the first week of month two on Yasmin. I have seen very little if any improvement. I, too, have heard such wonderful things about Yasmin so that is why i"m staying optimistic. I had some pretty good breakouts over the last few weeks that i"m attributing to an intial breakout. I am also on Doxycycline. Is this slowing down my progress on Yasmin?

I also began taking antibiotics at the same time I started taking Yasmin a little over 4 months ago. After about a month into it, my skin was much worse than I expected it to be and I was real discouraged. At that point, I STOPPED taking the antibiotic and things started looking better right away. I dont' know what it was, but the ampicillin (antibiotic) and the Yasmin were not getting along it seemed like. Anyways, you may want to try stopping the antibiotics.

Reply:I recommend Yasmin. I've been on it for 4 months and things are looking great.

Reply:I am on Ortho Tricyclen Lo and I'm having really good luck with it. No weight gain or psychotic behavior. The only bad thing about it was the initial breakout which I had for about 2 months & it made me really tired and lazy for the first two weeks  . It started to clear up my skin by the 3rd pack and my face is starting to look good again!

I used Desogen before and it worked wonders, my skin was flawless after the initial breakout. The only thing was that it made me gain weight and I was a total head case all the time. I can say the same for Ortho Tri-Cyclen and Demulin.

I have heard good things about Yasmin. Ortho Tri-Cyclen was terrible for me. So I am imagining the -LO wouldn't be that different.

Any other ideas or "I second that"'s? lol

Reply:I would try Yasmin. I'm starting my first pack on Sunday. My dermatologist recommended it. It's not androgen……..can't remember what it means but I was on Alesse and now i'm done with it. Don't ever try Alesse!!! Give Yasmin a try.

THANK you SO much. We are grateful for you. God Bless You GUYS.

I hope it goes well for you. Take care.

” The one thing that has kept me going is knowing that one day my face is clear and there are people who love me despte my imperfect face. “

Reply:Take care Frogprince. It's there if you need it.

Reply:Aww, well thank you. I really really like helping people, but what I like more is knowing that if I can give out the information, than people will be able to help themselves. I especially like knowing that if given the right information, those willing can become independent researchers themselves and are now capable of finding products or natural regimens that are the most effective for them. While I'm not as available I used to be, I still enjoy doing so, but I especially LOVE it when I see all of you working (vs. the alternative) together to help each other!

I hope things are going well for you too =)

I have the same frustrating experience most moderate / severe acne sufferers have had. 9 years I have had it and have tried everything, accutane, which really ruined my face, antibiotics, detoxification, homeopathy, herbs, topicals, hard exercise, diet, etc. Some of these things helped in particular homeopathy and some topicals as proactive. But nothing is done PERMANANTLY me.

2 months ago I signed up for microdermabrasian and laser treatments for my scars, etc. I also started the B5-B5 Vita Cure Acne Clear Skin Formula. 6 weeks ago I had about 20 seater, of which 10 were cystic, Today I got a pimple and it is not cystic. my skin has cleared up so remarkable and so fast, I just had to share. I did notice that my breakout increased my time on my next round, so I plan on increasing my b5 b5 dose.

I suggest giving a try, but make sure you a good company. the place where I am (above) guarantees results.

Acne Free in 1 night Gauranteed
Reply:thanks for the good wishes

b5 has worked on the cysts from down under for me. pore size? hmmm- it could be from microdermabrasian and lasers…

i only use over the counter benzol peroxide for spot treatments.

only side effects are decreased appetite, slightly looser bowel movements. b5 is water soluble i believe, so your body just rids of whatever it can't use.

my recommendation is stick with it for at least 6 weeks and don't be stingy on the brand or the dosage.

good luck.

Quick & Easy Acne Elimination
Reply:Thats great news, very happy for you, I have a few questions

Have you used a topical b5 cream aswell as the tablets/powder?

have your pores shrunk?

have you experienced any side effects?

Thanks, and don't smile too much, people will get jealous

Do you have acne sufferers take multivitamins?

Maybe, just maybe, the reason for some people MULTI VITAMIN be yourself.

—————————–

Your body produces vitamins and minerals from food eaten during the day. An additional intake of a multivitamin, the reason would acne.

It a sign that your body says, hey, there is too much of ****( to fill in the blank with the name of a vitamin or mineral) to be my system. “

———————————–

I also heard that multivitamin was generally poor. Why someone say this? For:

(a) Sometimes you have an allergic reaction to certain things in the vitamins that you dont know about.

(b) vitamins and minerals best alone. vitamins GNC sells only – not MULTI. Example with zinc and vitamin C on days 1, and vitamin E than magnessium day2, etc. .

(c) sometimes our bodies need certain vitamins in the multivitamin. For example, too much iron is very poor, along with other minerals.

———————–

JUST a thought in my acne ever emotions.
I crazy crazy these days.
I am depressed. I think about death too much.
I have too much thinking. I do not know what to do this day.

Acne Free in 1 night Gauranteed
Reply:Maybe you had a reaction to something else? After using a product for two or three days, can you really say it broke you out? You should at least try something for a couple of weeks to see if it really was what you are taking, like the multi vitamin.

Acne No More ™: Top Acne Book On Cb- *$27-$35/Sale* Up To $45/Sale!
Reply:Im in the same boat as doe! im on doxy and klaron and today im going to buy some B5 and B complex and see how that works. I am also on the fourth day of a low carb diet that will hopefully help with oil production. I will keep everyone posted on my B5 experience.

Quick & Easy Acne Elimination
Reply:alot of times with multis or even separate vitamins your body doesnt break it down and it winds up just coming out the other end-and can mess up your bathroom processes. It is usually better to take vitamins in a powder or liquid form than to take them as pills . Also-big multi vitamin/mineral pill suck because usually they contain so many things that contradict each other. For example, if the supplement has an inorganic iron supplement this will destroy the vitamin E if it is in the supplement at the same time.
ALso- it is important to be esp. careful in taking larger amounts of 1-minerals (esp IRON) 2-fat soluble vitamins (like A) 3-things like iodine and potassium ………/ in other words-yes vitamins can make u break out. RESEARCH before you take them!!!! in several different books!

The Missing Ingredient for Good Health
Reply:Doe, you may find with B5 that you don't get cysts anymore. Several of us have been fortunate that way. BHAs are also good for preventing and eliminating those two. Again, don't expect any real results until about 2 weeks have passed–the time when B5 starts to kick in. Anything before then may just be the result of whatever you were doing before, so hang in there! A B complex is a must. If you get hot and flushy, the Black Cohosh in addition is another must. It will take care of that immediately. I take one in the morning and one in the evening and had no further problems. Wish I'd done that sooner, as my first few weeks I was hot all the time.

Drink lots of water all through the day. Very important! I fill a 2-liter bottle with water and carry it with me wherever I go.

Eat Away Your Acne, How To Enjoy Food & Cure Your Acne
Reply:I started taking my B5 today…I'm hoping I don't have any major breakouts in the beginning…I've been taking a multi with green extracts and also B100 for about 7 years now…I always had nice skin…a zit here or there but these last 8 months it's gotten out of control…I think my body has started "the change"…I'll find out Wed. for sure…If I can find a new multi that doesn't have iodine in it I'd start that…I'm not sure it's my multi's though. How do you get rid of the hard ones that I believe are called cysts?

Relieving Your Live Of Acne
Reply:B5 does not necessarily cause initial breakouts. I never had any since I've been taking it. It did however cause clogged pores to pop out on their own–in hardened form for me, not as pimples. They just come out and wash away. Couldn't have asked for more from this miracle!

The Secret Acne Cure ™ – Fantastic Conversions Increase…
Reply:guy- some men who have had no skin problems in their lives tend to get acne at the age of 40. This is a 1 in 100 men approximation.

Add to injury, some people (men and women) are prone to BAD recations to MULI-VITAMINS. It can very well be the CAUSE or aggravator of the acne.

MULI-VITAMINS have things that our bodies all don't need. Iron is not neccessary to most. And for us acne people, we don't need Iodine nor B12. As for B5, it helps in large amounts, but also gives BREAKOUTS for the first couple weeks if taken in large amounts.

Why would MULTI-VITAMINS give breakouts to some people? Here is the deal:

All the vitamins and minerals in the MULTI don't go together. They are not compatible. Example is the 'iron' and the 'vitamin d.' Together, they produce TOXINS that your liver MAY not be able to handle, thus producing a reaction = acne.

Thats why some nutrition experts will tell you to check WHICH vitamins and minerals your body needs – thus taking ONLY those seperatly. Someone might need Magnessium, Zinc and Antioxidants (vitamins a thru d). While someone might need B6, B5, Copper, and Vitamin C. All depends on the body.

Taking the FULL multi vitamin might cause acne. The body tells you: "hey, I have too much 'so and so' in my system."

I am off the MULTI's this week. Guess what. No major new zits. Related? Who knows.

———————————–

Just think NATURALLY. Your body produces any needed vitamins and minerals from food eaten througout the day. Excess in minerals can be harmful. Do you think the ancient civilizations took MULTI-VITAMINS everyday? Who knows, but chances are they didn't.

On the other hand, I still take a daily VITAMIN C pill. Vitamin C is an exception because it passes thru the liver with ease and doesn't stay in the body system. It helps with the immune system, makes blood flow, and helps with heals.

Possibly some of you might be having a bad reaction to one of the contents in the multi-vitamin? I dont know. After I went on the B-complex vitamin, I definitely noticed an improvement in my hair though. It got shinier and more healthy looking.

Natural Herbal Acne Cures
Reply:Thanks for your replies. Enjoyed reading all your tales. I must say, this whole VITAMIN thing is a serious issue now.

My friends who have CLEAR skin don't take a single vitamin.

As of yesterday, I have totally stopped all my MULTI-VITAMINS – well have to see how it goes for the coming week. Nevertheless, I will continue my daily Vitamin C intake, because Vitamin C does no harm what so ever.

———————————-

On another note, I have an appointment with a NATURAL HEALING doctor next week. He specializes in herbal remedy and things like that. I will make sure I ask him all these VITAMIN questions and hope everything goes well.

Eventually, I think I will go simple with EITHER an iodine free multi or a simple antioxidant.

I truly think there are some things in today's multi vitamins that our bodies won't need too much of such as iron, b12, iodine, and some copper.

Reply:i take spectrum's fish oil which has been tested for pcb and mercury and calcium. my skin looks healthy and good but i'm not sure it's due to the supplements.

Reply:I started to take multi vitamins a few years back and instantly my skin conditions got worse, after a few months break i decided to give the vitamins another go and guess what?my skin conditions got worse again.
After reading about multi-vitamins on here i decided to look for a multi-vitamin without iodine in it,as this is ment to aggravate acne.
I have been taking my new multi-vitamin for the past month and i am pleased to announce that my skin condition has not worsened.

Reply:I took a Multi for a while, while on B-5, but it had Iodine, I stopped taking it and now I take a B-50 with the B Vitanamins only. My skin has gotten better but I still get these odd cysts that cannot be stopped.

Reply:This is not a crazy thought at ALL! I actually think my deep, painful lesions that started my whole acne fiasco 2 years ago at the age of 27 were triggered from a mega multivitamin that I started. I started taking a multivitamin for the first time in my life, in my attempt to get in better shape. I never attributed the acne to the contents of the multi (namely the iodine and heavy B vitamins, I will explain). And the more I researched acne when I started to have a problem, heavy vitamin supplement was considered a PLUS, so I never thought of it as part of the problem.

I was getting the deep, under-the-skin type pimples. No whitehead or anything on them, and they were very painful. Now thinking back I realize that this type of acne is not something that can be cured with a cleanser, etc. It's way too deep under the surface to treat that way.

About 6 months ago, after trying several types of multivitamins (such as GNC Ultra, etc), I gave up on my quest for a multivitamin with large amounts of vitamin A, etc. For about 18 months the multis I took had huge amounts of B vitamins, and also iodine.

I switched to a cheaper, simpler multi with only 100% RDA of most things, and no iodine. My acne started to change, from the large painful kind to typical acne that most people suffer with (such as from shaving, etc). I remember the last huge pimple I had on my nose, it was last August. The nose pimples were always HUGE, and would last for weeks. It's funny how I remember specifically the last one I had…I had gone to a luncheon with coworkers, and it was so embarrassing.

For a few months I stuck with the generic multi, and then about 2.5 months ago I stopped taking a multi. The only supplement I take now is a simple antioxidant with some A, C, E, and selenium. Nothing else.

I can't say for sure what in the multi was worsening my acne, but SOMETHING was. I know some studies say large amounts of B12 can aggravate acne, as well as iodine. But since stopping the multis, my skin is a million times better, and my acne now is not even recognized by most people.

In replace of the multi, I try to eat more healthy to get what my body needs. Your body can absorb more from food than it can from a pill anyway.

Just my story, hope it helps.

The problem became more and more serious. Suddenly I realized that the side effects of taking minocycline have been. I immediately stopped taking minocycline and applied pure tea tree oil on the infected areas. After 1 week the pimples disappeared. Not long after the pimples back behind my ears. They were very painful. I went to a dermatologist prescribed a different type of antibiotic for me to see. He could not believe my problem was the result of taking minocycline. I dare not to take antibiotics and went to another dermatologist to see. This dermatologist does not believe that my problem was caused by minocycline and again wanted to prescribed antibiotics for six months for me. I was very disappointed with the two dermatologists. I sought the advice of a doctor. He too did not believe that antibiotics was the cause. He explained that the function of the antibiotic for the acne to heal and not allowing the growth of IT. Finally another GP trust me, and he wrote a topical antibiotic ointment “baneocin for me. I had the application of this ointment on the back of my ears for 2 weeks and I am glad that 90% of my ear skin infection was cured. I also came across reports of other acne sufferers with the same problem after taking antibiotics. From now on I would no more antibiotics.
I read how it was supposed to be so good for skin, so I used it quite a bit. It was a clear 99% aloe vera gel.

I couldn't figure out why my skin got MORE dry and irritated. And I hated the sticky feeling that the gel left on my face and neck. I tried it multiple times, weeks on end. Took me a while to learn my lesson and realize that aloe vera gel just wasn't cutting it for me.

It dried out my skin, and I think it even led to more breakouts. My skin couldn't "breath" with this stuff on it. It definitely should not be used as a moisturizer.

Good question, the only single blades I can find are disposable Bics which don't really work too well. You could try one of those cutthroat blades that old people use but am sure you will cut yourself much more.

The razor market is so ridiculous, first they release singles followed by doubles then triple blades were all the craze especially with the "Gillette Mach 3". All my friends used it and I thought it actually wasn't any good. Now we are being inundated with quadruple blades with "Wilkinson Quattro". This is going over the top. Next it will be facial lawn mowers. Don't believe the hype!

Acne X Factor
Reply:I usually shave with a triple blade, the mach turbo, but tehn again i don't have much of a beard.
Instant Acne Remedy
Reply:LOL, excellent…I was just going to post the exact same post as I have been experiencing problems with shaving and recently also read that you should use a single blade razor. The reason for this is because apparently double and trible blades actually pulls the stubble out of the follicles thus shaving BELOW the epidermis of the skin. When the skin naturally heals back, the epidermis then re-grows over the open follicles. The problem arises when the stubble attempts to grow through this closed follicle. Obviously it can't and the resulting effect is inflammation of the skin called Pseudofolliculitis barbae. For best results, i.e. less risk of inflammation, it is better to use an electric shaver.

Everyone says to shave with the grain but this doesn't give me a close enough shave so I also shave against it (upwards). Afterwards my skin is very smooth and stubble-free and I have never experienced inflammation before. The only problem I am experiencing is my skin seems a bit patchy afterwards, like some parts of the skin are lighter (where it has been shaved closer?) than others. I thinking about switching to a single blade and seeing if this produces better results.

With regards to post-shaving creams/lotions: you can use a mild alcohol-free toner like witch hazel or antibacterial gel which will kill bacteria before it gets into the open follicles. This helps to stop Pseudofolliculitis barbae before it starts (if you are worried about that problem).

I just use plain old after-shave/eau de toilette like CK, Davidoff etc.

Reply:This is a question to the guys out there. How many of you shave with a multi blade razor? How many with a single blade? I read recently that it is much better for acne sufferers to use single blade razors. Also, does anyone use aloe vera gel as a shaving gel? :bouncing:

The best razor is the Gilette Sensor Excell with 2 blades; you don't need anymore than that. Always shave with down ward strokes, and never go against the grain. As far as shaving balms go use Clinique Aloe Shave gel, and buy their post shave healer – they are brilliant products.
They have slightly different chemical structures, so some act more like testosterone than others. (They still can decrease testosterone though by shutting down the ovaries).
Ortho Cyclen has norgestimate which isn't very androgenic. The two progestins that are *theoretically* safer for people with acne to try are desogestrel and drospirenone (which is the theoretical best because it is the only progestin available in the US which isn't derived from testosterone; it is derived from spironolactone so that it not only shuts down the ovaries, it binds to testosterone coming from the adrenal glands to lower it even more). Pills with desogestrel are Desogen, Cyclessa, and Mircette. Yasmin is the only pill with drospirenone.
You also have to look at the estrogen dosage. It can help counteract the testosterone effects of the progestin.
And keep in mind this is all theoretical. How you react to a given pill might be different than how most people react.

guy,
Could you explain what androgenic progestin is and what pills are better for acne in this regard? I am considering changing the pill I am on. Right now I am on orthocyclin (not tri or lo, just plain ortho) and I have been battling hormone related cysts ever since I have been on it.
Thanks for your help!

I'm currently sitting at the computer while my boyfriend is on the couch reading…I just washed my face and applied a gob of clearasil to every zit I could find. When I entered the room after my application, I said to him "look at me, I'm gorgeous". He said, "of course you are".

I'm not saying you need to parade around in front of your boyfriend with your zit cream on (maybe I'm just weird )…. But, give him a chance. I understand your skin has gotten worse lately from your current bcp – have you talked to him about that? He may be more supportive than you think.

Good luck!

I think I am going to try out Ortho Tri-cyclen pretty soon – as soon as I get my period.
I have never been breaking out so much – I hate Alesse – I only had mild/moderate acne before Alesse.
It really messed up my skin.
I'm still breaking out 3 weeks later (I went off it 3 weeks ago), and it doesn't look like its stopping any time soon.
My topicals arn't working very well either.
Does anybody know why I broke out on Alesse? Was it just an initial breakout? Did I need to adjust to the pill? I went off it because I was breaking out a lot – not just a little!!!
I have no choice but to try a BCP.
My dermatologist won't prescribe any antibiotics – just topicals (none are working).
Thanks for all the feedback – I really hope Ortho is for me – It helped my sister alot…
I don't want to face my boyfriend… I guess at least I'll know if he really is the one for me – if he's there through the bad as well as the good right?
OTC-LO was awful though. do a search on this site for OTC and OTC-lo to see more comments.

when i first realized something was wrong my leg started to get really sore and it ached really bad. eventually it swelled up (after 2 days of the soreness) and it got blueish and it was really hard to walk. all in all it looked really different from my other leg so i went to the hospital and stayed for 3 days.. went on blood thinners immediately and basically didn't walk for a month. the biggest, obvious symptom was the soreness and appearance (swollen). hope that helped

Reply:i went on ortho tricyclen lo for acne and after 8 weeks i developed massive blood clots in my leg (i'm 18). within those 8 weeks i did not notice a significant difference.

Reply:Ive been very successful with ortho tri cyclen. for me, it was basically a miracle worker. my skin is not perfect..but it is a vast improvement. ive been on it for 3 years now.. and i no longer get any of the cystic acne at all anymore. i switched to ortho-lo and i felt that it did nothing for my skin and even made it worse..but i was also studying abroad at the time, which could have affected my skin since it was a new environment and all that.. i am unsure as to what the differences there are amongst the different types of birth control, but i saw awesome results and i think it's worth a try. but like everyone says, everyone is different and everyone has different results. it took about 2-3 mos. to start working..but when i first started, i went back to the derm and he told me i was his case of the day b/c my skin had cleared up so dramatically..even to the point where he woudnt let me go on accutane anymore. i would give it a try!! good luck!!

Reply:bbsq… I'm on Desogen with no problems. I haven't had any zits and my skin is clearing up more, but I'm not sure if my new rosacea med is helping too? At any rate, my doctor felt like it was the second best pill for acne (behind Yasmin).

Reply:orthotricyclen made my daughter break out horribly for 4 months and then she stopped taking it and went on accutane.

Reply:I had been on OTC for about 9 months, and it definitely didn't clear anything, and my acne actually got worse too (but that may have been because of stress). I'm on desogen now, which is supposed to be good too, and my face has actually been clearing. I can't tell if it's because of the new pill, or the new cleansing routine I've been using, or both. Anyway, OTC didn't help me at all, but everyone's different. Hope it works for you

Reply:I am on Ortho Tricyclen lo and will soon be switching to the generic Ortho Tricyclen (Tri Sprintec) – due to insurance. The Ortho Tricyclen Lo helped with my breakouts, and it contained lower amounts of androgen binding hormones (the hormones that makes females break out) than the regular Ortho Tricyclen. My guess is that if the "Lo" version was effective, the regular Ortho Tricyclen will be just as effective, if not perhaps more. However, everyone's body will react differently to these new hormones. My doctor says to give a new pill 2-3 cycles. My guess is that it would be worth your time to give it a try. Good luck!

Reply:In my experience with ortho-tricyclen, I couldn't believe they advertised it to improve one's skin as I saw just the opposite. I'm probably the exception though, it says it has been clinically proven to reduce break outs. I found that my skin was much worse when I used this form of oral contraception. Hope your experience is better than mine. From what I hear about accutane though you might just want to give the ortho a shot first to see what happens. Everybody is different you know.
Good luck!
Shawnee

Reply:Ortho made my have a horrible breakout for 3 months off and on,.. then it calmed down, but i still got acne. It got worse, then got better, then worse. Never consistent.

Now i'm on Diane 35 and it is clearing me up really well! I've been on it only 1 month and one week, and now…i'm getting tingling sensasions in my legs. I think i'm developing blood clots, so i'm going to the Dr tomorrow to switch before i DIE!

I'm thinking of trying Marvelon/Desogen … anyone try this one???
