Hi! : Wave: I have been suffering from severe acne for a few years now, and I wondered: “Am antiobiotics the only solution?” It seems that there are no other alternatives. I have tried many facial cleansers, over-the-counter acne medications, and prescribed a topical cream, but nothing seems to do no good. I tried proactive and was only able to use it for about 2-3 days, because my skin so dry it was, I could not stand, and I was using the minimum amount. I just finished try the Clean Clear Acne u0026 consisting Facial Cleanser and moisturizer with salycilic acid kit, and it made my skin worse than Ive seen in my life! My doctor prescribed tetracycline, but Im just tired of antibiotics. Besides, Ive heard that antibiotics are only a temporary solution, which means you should constantly be on antibiotics lasting results. There seems no hope! Are antibiotics the only way out and even if you try and they work, what if the acne comes back? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Sadie

Reply:yeah im taking those amp pills along with some topical stuff – how long until the antibiotics take effect?

Reply:No one is trying to scare anyone…. But why not tell people the possibilities of things that can happen with long term courses of anti-biotics?

They aren't necessarily going to happen if you use them long term, but there is always that chance.

So please dont descredit someones statement

Reply:Yes NM80 Ampicillin pills are antibiotics. But dont worry they wont harm you.
There are alot of fanatical people online that can scare the living daylights out of you. The phsycological effects of acne with cause more harm then the meds you are on. Plus dont stress – That causes acne
Good luck

Reply:are Ampicillin pills considered antibiotics?

Reply:I don't think long term courses of anti-biotics are worth it.. Look into the correlation between using then long term and stomach/intestinal problems later like IBS.

I took tetracycline in 9th grade for a long time, then something else, can't remember, then doxy after I graduated.

The gastro specialist(stomach intestinal etc. specialist) says there is a correlation, and so did the nutrionist I visited.

Reply:I've been using retin-a and doxycycline for 10 months and my face is almost completely clear. I definitely recommend trying these perscriptions before trying Accutane (in fact, I think you'll have trouble getting an Rx for accutane from your derm before you try practically every other possible option first).

If you decide to take retin-a, just make sure you closely follow the instructions. When you first start taking it, only use it at night maybe once every 3 days, then gradually once every other day, and finally once everyday after your skin has become used to it.

Reply:Thank you so much for your comments, guys! The only problem with oral medications like Accutane, tetracycline, etc. is that I'm just so scared of them because many of them have some very dangerous potential side effects like liver damage and, like what Kerry1 said, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, amongst other things. I know these side effects are rare; I guess I'm a little paranoid (my mom's the same way; it's hereditary ). I would feel much better trying a topical antibiotic. But if none of these work, I don't what I'll do.

guy: I'm not 100% sure, but I think the topical cream my doctor prescribed was clyndamicin. I'll have to check with my pharmacist to be sure; it was quite a while ago when I tried it. If it's not, I'll try to get a prescription for it. However, I've heard that Retin-A can be very drying to the skin and increase skin sensitivity, and considering the fact that my skin got terribly dry when using ProActive, there's a good chance my skin may not react well to this medication as well. But I'm willing to give it a try. Have you ever had any problems with dryness or sensitivity?

Thanks again to all of you for your feedback! It's so nice to have someone to turn to who understands.

Sadie

Reply:I don't know much about acne, but I would try to avoid oral antiobiotics. I knew several people in high school who took tetracycline, and it worked, but it's been linked to Chronic Fatigue Syndrome later in life. Believe me, you'd rather have acne, as awful as it seems. Topical antiobiotics sound far less dangerous. You shouldn't have to take them forever.

Reply:Hi Sadie,
If you truly do have sever acne you need to be on accutane sever acne could cause premanent scarring.Dont waste your time with antibiotics Sever acne requires accutane

Reply:what is meant by "antibiotics" -> does that just mean medicine you take orally (pills?) ?

Not all oral pills are antibiotics. "Antibiotics" refer to the classes of drugs that kill bacteria; in this case, prescription drugs that kill bacteria. Antibiotics come in pill, topical (cream, ointment, etc), and injectable forms. Most common for acne treatment are the pill and topical forms. Examples for acne are doxycycline, tetracycline, and clinamycin.

Reply:what is meant by "antibiotics" -> does that just mean medicine you take orally (pills?) ?

Reply:Hi guy,
I just want to let you know that I had the most success with topical antibiotic. It's the clyndamicin pledgets that I apply twice a day, once in the morning and once at night. Before, I had moderate acne for 4 to 5 years. My skin was soo dull and bumpy. I tried many things including expensive acupuncture (twice) and nothing worked. I was very hesitant trying anything that has to do with antibiotics because I heard that antibiotics only worked temporarily and your acne might end up getting worse than it already is. That's why I never went to see a dermatologist. After trying and trying numerous times, I decided to go see one, and he prescribed me this along with retin A. I have to tell you that this is the only thing that worked for me. I have been using for more than a year, and it still works fine. I have also received lots of comments about my skin too, and so therefore, I realized that I cannot live without it. I wished I had tried this alot sooner and stuck with it. My face still has these little spots, and a few scars due to previous acne. Imagine if I had tried these 2 years ago, my face now would be completely flawless. Anyways, my point is: everybody's different. Many people think topical antibiotics did not work for them, but to me, they work wonders. So please give it a try and see how your face reacts to it.
Good luck
Anita

Reply:Hi! I've been suffering from severe acne for a couple of years now, and I was wondering, "Are antiobiotics the only solution?" It seems that there are no other alternatives. I've tried numerous facial cleansers, over-the-counter acne medications, and a prescribed topical cream, but nothing seems to do any good. My doctor prescribed Tetracycline, but I'm just weary of antibiotics. Besides, I've heard that antibiotics are only a temporary fix, meaning you would have to be on antibiotics permanently to have lasting results. There seems to be no hope! Are antibiotics the only way out and even if you try it and they work, what do you do when the acne comes back? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Sadie

Antibiotics are commonly used because acne is often caused by bacteria trapped in skin pores. Bacteria can only be killed (thus eliminating acne) with an antibacterial agent, such as an oral or topical antibiotic.

Most people have success with antibiotics, and not everyone has to take them for the rest of their life.

Sounds like accutane may have been overkill for your type of acne. Did you try all the conventional therapies first? It truly is supposed to be for recalcitrant or cystic acne. My daughter had cysts and bumps for years and years and went through all the antibiotics and all of that from age 11 to age 16 when everything stopped working. I'm sorry you are going through all of this. Thank you for replying to me.

Reply:I had lot of small whiteheads before accutane, mostly on my forehead and around my mouth. After accutane, i stopped getting those but they've been replaced by big cysts that take so long to heal and i'm also stuck with the scars i've mentioned before.

Reply:I was on it for 6 months and it worsened my acne a lot.

So, are you saying that your acne never went away and that you were left with acne and scarring?

Reply:I was on it for 6 months and it worsened my acne a lot.

Reply:Acid Rain – My daughter broke out real bad at first too and has some scarring from that. She seems to be taking it in stride as she has her whole course. Have you thought about dermabrasion or Co2 treatments and not just injections? There are alot of treatments now for scarring. I wish you luck. Have your breakouts subsided at least? How long ago were you on accutane?

Reply:I was on 80mg a day for 6 months. 40mg in the morning and another 40 before bed.

It helped with the oily skin problem, it helped me get rid of comedones on my nose but it made me broke out like crazy after 2 weeks. I never had acne on my cheeks, but while on accutane i developped enormous bumps on my cheeks. I tend to pick at my face but those things were so painful i didn't dare to touch them at all. First time it happened i had 1 on each cheek and one day i was taking a shower and the hot water maked them both pop. They most have bled for a good 30 minutes. During my courseof accutane i had 7 of those monstrous things, and now i have 7 gigantic craters in my face that i'm probably stuck with for the rest of my life because of accutane. They're all around the same size as the smilies we have on these forums

Ironically, the dermatologist who prescribed me this drug wrecked my face for the rest of my life and now i have to waste even more money on other dermatologists for injections to fix the whole mess. I'm currently seeing the best derm in Quebec and he's tried pretty much every product he has to fill up the scars. At first the scars are gone and my skin is fine, but after 2-3 weeks, whatever he's injected into the scars seems to just vanish overnight. He says it's the first time he ever sees something like this happen. Next week i'm going to visit him again and we'll try a new product that just came up, but it's very expensive. I've already spend 3000$ CAD on this, next week it'll be 4000$. Good thing my parents are helping me pay most of it heh.

Reply:Glad to hear you're one of those lucky people for who it worked.
Accutane was by far the worst thing to happen to me in my entire life, wish it worked for me too

Please elaborate for us. I know I'm curious as to what you mean. It's important for all of us to hear the good and the bad. Please tell us your dosage and length of time of your course.

Reply:Hi guy,

I'm glad to hear your daughter is finishing accutane this week. Going off it was pretty scary for me too since I was afraid all my problems would come back. It's been 4 1/2 months and I only had one pimple on my forehead.

Congratulations bostongirl – I'm so happy for you.

Reply:guy- how long until your daughter had dramatic results?

Dramatic? I would say it's taken the whole 6 months. I always tell people that for some it's a long process but most see results in the end. I'm hoping for long term remission and that will truly be dramatic.

Reply:Glad to hear you're one of those lucky people for who it worked.
Accutane was by far the worst thing to happen to me in my entire life, wish it worked for me too

Reply:Congratulations to you. I wish you continued success. Thank you for coming back to encourage others. My daughter finishes this week and she's clear (maybe one on her face) but compared to 50 it's pretty darn good. By scars, do you mean red marks? The doc gave her Epiquin for that and it's helping already. I'm stressed about her going off. Hopefully, the good results will last. I'll come back and let everyone know too.

Reply:Hi, I was wondering how long it took you to see major results. I am on day 44 of accutane and my back has cleared up a lot..but i think it has made my face a little worse. Do you think that accutane isn't working for me? My lips are a little chapped and my skin gets a little dry, but nothing like i had expected. I sure hope this works.
I mean, Ive done quite severe acne, but when I watch what I eat, such as avoiding sugar, dairy and wheat, my skin looks like Im a mild form of acne. At this moment since Im home for the summer, its quite easy to eat like that, but when I returned to college in the fall, Im afraid my face will get worse, because the stress and poor diet. So back to my original question, if you eat junk, but clearly from Accutane, you breakout? Thanks

Reply:I still eat junk once in a while and did throughout my accutane treatment. I've been off accutane since Sept. 04 and haven't had any problems.

Reply:i am on accutane, my skin look great, or will when the red spots go away, but i am clear. i do watch my diet, but mostly b/c i've had cholesterol problems from the tane. i'm still quite afraid to eat junk food since i used to have such severe reactions to it, esp soft drinks for some reason. how i wish i could enjoy an ice cold pepsi w/out fear! *sigh*

Reply:Not really. I took Accutane from Nov 04-Apr 05. My skin looks great.

Reply:I am currently on accutane, and still am very strict with my diet. My derm says this helps you have a better reaction to accutane.

Reply:I tried Accutane several years ago! Best thing I ever did. Prior to accutane I tried everything including changing my diet. Nothing worked. Now approv 4 yrs after A can eat anything & am still clear!Good luck!

Reply:You're right it is what you eat, no greesy food such as eggs and french fries, no soda's and dairy products and your good to go. I'm trying to watch the greesy food, i'm ok w/ dairy foods. Also I heard somewhere people should eat according to their blood type. That would help tremendously! I have never tried accutane, it must work though. I'm going to try another product that should be at my door step by monday

Is a cream or things I can put this to help stop or other things I can do to get rid of it?

Thanks

Reply:My derm gave me an Rx for Laclotion to clear it

Reply:I'm not sure what that is. Lots of people get it and it seems to come and go on its own. I think that using an exfoliant is supposed to help. It's not like regular acne, though, so I don't think the usual treatments do anything for it. My roommate has a bad case of it, and it just suddenly cropped up one day when she was like 35, with no warning. *shrug*

Reply:This is a possibility; Do you put your hands on your shoulders/top of your arms and by that I mean do you cross your arms going upwards with your hands kinda hanging onto your shoulders/top of arms? Or since you play soccer do you have alot of people coming up to you and maybe grabbing ahold of yoru shoulders/top of your arm?

I had the same problem and while I was trying to figure out what caused it I noticed I used to stand like <I mentioned above> that alot; When I caught myself standing like I stopped and now I don't do that anymore and they are completely gone. Just a thought because when you really think about it our hands are really disgusting with all the crap throughout the day that we come in contact with, plus you are playing soccer you may have other peoples filthy hands all over you!
I had severe acne before making my life miserable diane35. I fear that my acne would come back if I stop diane35.

Reply:any changes in estrogen levels or any hormonal levels for that matter can have acne affects. After being on a bc pill for 10years I went off them…they were just normal bc pill nothing special for acne..and that is when my acne hit and went crazy, hair fell out etc. took me 2 years to level back out…I will say that for me..note "FOR ME" .lol..diet helped the most, eating more oil actually, lower carb and more protein…I also take flax seed and primrose oil, and estroven (herbal estrogen promoter) that has helped immensly. I have been clear for some time..I will say though it takes the body awhile to start producing its own hormones again after having taken a "pill" for so long, so give it some time to level out before going on more pills …might take 6months or more and you might hate your skin, but you will be surprised and happy if/when you can find your own balance..

Reply:Actually I was just watching the news today and they were talking about Acne and Diane 35, how it is dangerous and that they banned it in some European Country. Now they say dermatologists in Canada are just perscribing for BAD cases of acne. Anyways they metioned that acne will come back once you stop taking Diane 35. Actaully i had to stop taking it cause i had BAD side effects and my acne came back can never win acne sucks!

Reply:Your acne will probably come back if you stop taking Diane 35 but why don't you give it a try? Go off it for a month or two and see how things go. If your acne comes back, go back on it. You should just be lucky you can even take Diane, after 3 months my blood pressure becomes so high I have to go off it and my acne returns.

Reply:I completely know how you feel. I was on Diane-35 for 2 years and loved how it cleared my acne up. I tried a lot of things before but nothing worked until Diane. My doctor advised that I switch to a pill with a lower estrogen content, so that's what I decided. I knew that if I got off any pill, my acne would come back. I wish I didn't have to take anything for acne, but the reality is, my hormones aren't very stable. I sincerely hope you find what works for you.

Reply:never heard of regenerist.. my only problem was my face was always pink, which sucked.

Reply:would u suggest i stick to cetaphil cleanser and moustirizer or move on to regenerist? i've heard so many things about regenerist. my main problem is redness, blemishes, and scars

Reply:and at the end of the 3rd month i saw the most dramatic improvements.

Reply:hey frogprince.. congrats on your clear face too.. Luckily for me I didn't have any red marks or anything left over on my face.. after the first month of accutane i stopped using all products except for cetaphil moisturizer… i washed my face with water, (although the last month i started using neutrogena body wash) and dried off then applied moisturizer… and during the last month when my derm lowered me back to 40 mg a day all the dryness went away and i didnt need moisturizer or chap stick.

Reply:guy..i was totally clear during hte last month of my treatment.. and about 95% clear during the 2nd to last month.

Reply:my face has cleared but i have so much marks and redness!! aahhhhh!!!

Reply:another question, how long did it take u to finally see results???

Reply:congratulations on your clear face. I am very happy for you.

i really need your help in advice and counseling. I am in my 2nd month of accutane and most of my acne has cleared. The only topical i am using is the clearasil cleanser and mousterizer. My skin feels smooth and soft, but i am still experiencing problems with leftover scars and blemishes. I need some help and advice of how to get rid of these marks, like what products are good. If u could also advice me on a good sunscreen to use. Thanks you very much. And again, i'm very happy for your clear face now.

Reply:Way to go!

What topicals are you on now?

I am closing in on the last week of treatment, WHEW! I hear 'ya all the way!

ButI by no means clear. Were you clear by the end, or did it get gradually better after you quit? I know it varies from person to person, so just out of curiosity!

Reply:Don't worry.. you didn't scare me.. ive already planned it out if it starts coming back.. i think ill ask my derm to put me back on 40 mg a day..i know for a lot of people accutane only temporarily clears them.. im just living my life for now.

Reply:Hi I am very glad you are clear. Congrats. Not to scare you, but one recommendation I would make is be cautious. I was cleared from accutane for about a good 6 months then the acne started coming back. I would just say continue to monitor yourself and if at some point (not meaning to scare you) just try and not wait for your results to undue themselves like so many people have. Be proactiv. Goodluck and i hope thats not the case for you. I am just recommending for your sake. Goodluck

Reply:not on my face.. there was no red marks left on my face.. but there was a few deeper purple marks on my chest.. those are mostly gone by now though

Reply:i just finished my 5 months yesterday..going to do an extra month

im 100% clear and have the ladies as well only thing is there are some old red blemishes (not acne) stil left..barely visable…i guess time wil take care of that. did u have that a teh 5 month mark?

Reply:Wow, congrats Tiredofthisall! Sounds like Accutane worked a miracle for you! Here's wishing to forever clear skin for you

I do remember you posting before If I can ask, how old are you? I am going to the derm this Thursday, and I will be pushing quite heavily for Accutane. I am turning 30 this month, and as far as I know for adult male acne Accutane is usually something that is attempted. I have tried several antibiotics and other px products, but I am still as bad or worse than I was when I started.

Again, congrats on your success. I remember the days of NEVER worrying about my skin…god how I miss those days

Reply:Try using jojoba oil…. my skin is a white snowy flaky mess after I wash it (because of harsh medications, not just naturally like yours, but it's flaky all the same), then I put aloe on (just because with my skin, I found if just used the jojoba oil, my skin felt dry still, with some oil on top… hard to understand, I know… but it just felt better when I put the aloe on first, but lots of people on here use it alone), and while its still wet, I massage in jojoba oil all over.. works wonders, no more flakes!! They come back as soon as I wash again, but at least they are gone while I need to show my face in public. I haven't tried make-up over it yet cause i gave it up in favor of my skin 3 weeks ago, but I have read people on here who have used it before make up and liked it. I have just used powder, and its didnt flake off.

Reply:I also had mild/mod acne for 15 yrs. My derm told me that he'd like to put me on a low dose of accutane. I expected accutane to work wonders for me considering my acne was not that bad, but I am in my sixth month now, on a dose of 60mg and still have acne. I had an initial break out, but it wasn't that bad. I think how bad it is depends on your dosage. After using accutane, I've also gotten a number of break outs in places where I had never broken out before and cysts which I had never even had. I also noticed I would get an "initial breakout" everytime my dosage was upped. Although my skin is much improved and my oil is completely gone, I am not as clear I expected I would be by now. Don't assume that because you have mild acne that accutane will work better or faster for you than someone with more severe acne.

The cost benefit ratio of accutane for mild acne is just not worth it in my view. Mod acne is perhaps different, but I would try the lasers like smoothbeam before tane if I were you, and exhaust all avenues, which as you know are too multifarious to conceive of.

AA

Reply::) yes Hollister is the best! haha.. but yeah i am on doxy now with a couple of topicals!

then go for the tane. I wouldnt worry too much, the results are all worth it.

Reply:Well, it depends on the person, but from what ive read from other people posts, yes you will have an intial breakout and your acne would be the worst ever was. Your face will become extremely oily for a few days, then all the sudden it will be a desert. Your lips will be chapped and all the pimples, blackheads, cysts underneath that never surfaced will be forced out.
But then again, there are the lucky ones that straight out from week 1 starts to see magnificent improvement, and never have initial breakouts.
Hope that helps.

Are u on any medication for your acne now? I had mod acne and never really suffered a bad initial breakout. Hollister RockS!
