Reply:I was reading about that Salmon thread and it just dawned on me that the only thing different I had been doing lately is I have been eating a LOT of fresh COD almost every day.I can't help but wonder if maybe there is some kind of buildup of a toxic chemical in my brain like magnesium or something?I think I'm going to do a search.

[This message has been edited by guy (edited 05-09-2003).]

Reply:My blood sugar was fine and I did take the iron pill with food.I'm feeling weak this morning but better.I'm not going to drink any coffee.I'm too scared that head exploding feeling back.Dang,I'm already missing my coffee.

Reply:I hope your day today is better than yesterday…..that must've been scary. Also were you taking your iron pill on an empty stomach?? That would be enough to make me sick. Feel good, dsheldon.

Reply:Good. I'm so glad you're okay.

Reply:Did you have them rule out blood sugar problems and allergies? In addition to an anxiety attack, these could also cause the exact same symptoms.

Reply:Just got back from hospital. All bloodwork and tests came out perfectly fine.None of the doctors had ever heard of Spiro being taken for hormonal acne.Nobody could explain why I am feeling like my head is going to explode. Oh well, just glad that there is nothing wrong with me.Kind of feel like a paranoid idiot though.

Reply:Be careful! I would definitely only take it under a dr.'s supervision. I even had to get bloodwork when I went on it– not fun, but at least you will be safe.

Just watching out for 'ya!

Reply:Well, I'm feeling a little better as far as being able to breathe but I just had an anxiety attack so I guess I don't know whats going on.I want to take some ibuprofen to calm me down but am afraid it will start making me bleed more,I ate real healthy today and haven't taken nothing but an iron pill.

Reply:dsheldon: Hi again, so sorry to hear you're having problems today. I actually take my 50mg in the late afternoon. This way the diuretic effect is still worn off before bed and yet I've had enough to eat during the day to keep me from getting nauseous. I even did this for the 5 years I took it at 125mg before. I have felt the fatigue somewhat, but can't really say for sure it was from the spiro. I also had irregular bleeding on this when I took it back then, and I am thin and somewhat under weight so there were a few times I was a little light headed, but nothing that was often. If you get a pill splitter, you may also want to try dividing the dose during the day instead of taking it all at once (if you stay at the higher dose.) I know how scary these feelings can be and I'm always the first one to blame the meds. Maybe cut back a bit and take your iron pills and take them at a different time of the day. I know most people try to take in the a m, but that never worked for me. I take everything later in the day. Also, since the spiro is potassium SPARING you have to watch the additional intake of potassium through your regular diet. I've heard people can get strange feelings and symptoms based on that too. Keep us posted and feel better.!!

Reply:Yes, I'm on Yasmin and Spiro. I'm taking BC because that's the first level of treatment for hormonal acne. Then the endo layerd on Spiro. I also take it b/c I don't want kids yet & it keeps me from spotting while on Spiro.

Reply:guy
Are you on both Spiro and BC?What birthcontrol do you take.Do you take the BC to keep from spotting?I'm so mad at myself for forgetting to take my iron pills.I usually don't forget about important things like that.

Reply:No, I haven't had those symptoms. My only thing is that I'm more tired sometimes. I worry that you aren't under a doctor's supervision. Definitely cut back the dosage & see if you feel better. I hope so. Be safe.

Also, if there's anyway you can go on BP I suggest you do. I have had no spotting at all & my periods are totally regular.

Just prepare in case I need to convince myself that has not helped. Do not get me wrong, Im spiro biggest advocate. It took me quite clear for 5 years. I could have rubbed grease all over my face and then went to bed and not even a pimple.

However, has stopped working for me right before my hysterectomy just can not seem to keep up. I was 125 mg and even tried to increase the dose. No luck. But since Ive taken accutane, and now take a maintenance dose, I thought maybe it could keep the spirometer. I started last September with 100 mg, then increased to 150 mg two months later . just dry skin . severe dry from the medication. So I fell back to 50 mg to want to keep because I still believed sosooooo much. Was I wrong? I even started the Yasmin 14 weeks ago and thought the little bit extra spiro there would also help.

BUT while Im afraid you do “something”, so Im afraid to stop her.
Anybody no good results with spiro?
L:)

Reply:Thanks for the replies. As far as moisturizers, EVERYTHING I have ever tried breaks me out. With Lupus, my immune system attacks my own body, even whan there is no problem. If I use something that it "sees" as an enemy, it goes on the attack. The jojoba oil is the only thing that has ever helped me.

AS far as the accutane, I've cut down to 2 pills per week which is about the minimum at this time. I'm hoping to go off someday, but can't right now. Even at 7 days per week for 5 months though it never cleared me and after I stopped, I was broken out again like I had neve taken it with in 5 days. Of course this was before I knew I had lupus. .

I drink 1 1/2 gallons of water per day to combat the dryness and as I said the jojoba oil helps with that, but Im not sure about staying with the jojoba. Its hard to give up something that I've believed in though.
I will think about everything and slowly make changes until I find the right path.

Im not sure about you with the spiro and don't want to discourage you, but for me it really kept me clear at 125mg for 5 years. Not one pimple and then one day it started again. The spiro no longer controlled it even at the high dose of 200mg.

Good luck

Reply:I would stop taking spiro. Accutane + spiro is not a very good combination for the skin. If you are concerned about acne, I think Accutane should do the work but I don't know.

I've been on spiro for 2 years. My current dosage is 200mg/day. It worked great for a year but I've been getting some serious breakouts for the past 2 weeks. I don't know why. Maybe it stopped working? *sigh*

(edit) I've just read the other thread you started. I really do not know much about the lupus rashes but I know dry skin may also cause a skin rash and things may look worse. Spiro alone makes my skin very dry and red. Sorry, I wish I could help more. (/edit)

[This message has been edited by guy (edited 05-08-2003).]

Reply:Can't you just use a moisturizer if your skin gets too dry from increasing the Spiro dose? What does your doctor think about it?Does he think its safe?I would think it would be safe since your closely monitered by your doctor.Might be worth a try.Can you not use moisturizer when you have Lupus with dry skin?

Reply:i'm sorry guy…it all sounds harrowing. My personal opinion would be to sweep out as much as possible, give your body a rest, and then start at tabula rasa. But it's just my opinion. If you're this miserable you don't have much to lose at this point by getting rid of stuff and starting over fresh.
You wanted to see a new derm right? Why don't you do that, and see what that person says. Go with your heart… if you don't want to try something, or don't feel right about it, you shouldn't feel pressured into it.
If it makes you feel better….i have at least a hundred pimples of one kind or another too

Reply:guy– wow you are going thru some tough things right now. have you thought about trying a new derm because your derm doesn't seem to be helping.. i had to really search for a derm that would help me and it took 15 years to get the help i needed. i tried everything possible and finally i found my answer with spiro and that is after going to at least 8 derms to help me. i feel so bad that you can't get the right answers to your skin problems. it does seem like you are on a lot of medications. i don't know too much about lupus but i know what it's like to have persistant, cystic acne. i'm 32 now and have dealt with it since i was 13 years old. i just want to wish you luck in your search for answers and the board is a great solice in all of our acne battles.

Now hysterctomy 9 weeks ago, but still ovaries. The operation did nothing to help my acne, it made it infact worse.
I wanted to say this, if there was a small chance surgrey they heal. I really feel that the Spiro fixed within days!

Reply:X2z do you have insurance?

My Spiro only costs me 5 bucks a month.

Much much cheaper than I have spent monthly over the years in products and meds that failed.

It also keeps you from retaining water. Not sure that men need that though

If this meds keeps working I won't ever stop taking it.

Reply:It doesn't HAVE to be taken with OCs. But you do have to avoid pregnancy and depending on the dosage it can make your periods come closer together. I've read it can help cystic acne.

Reply:Is Spiro only to be taken with oral contraceptives? Is it only for women? Is Spiro for mild/med acne or for severe acne( which is what I have) you can read my post below.
Thanks for any answers!!

Reply:damn i wanna take it, but I'm a guy, and I dont want to pay for it for the rest of my life if it does work.

Well its been a while since I last posted here. Back in July I started Yasmin for hormonal acne and it worked pretty well my face is clear 90% of the time. However, I had some serious weight gain over the past 3 months that seems to have had a MAJOR worse.

I appetite to increase the first 2 weeks, but thats gone and my appetite was back to normal. (Im a vegan for three years so its not my food choices that cause weight gain). But I gained 15 pounds (92-98 to about 113). I am a professional dancer and gymnast and my instructors have said my weight gain is unacceptable, because Im faster, I can not warm up as fast elevator, and I have new uniforms and dance to leotards because I can not fit into my regulars . (Sorry to go into details, Im just venting). But I have not worked any less and the weight will not come off.

I really want instead try Spiro. Is this potential for weight gain?

And too-when I come off the Yasmin, it is likely that the extra weight come from?

Reply:Hello! Its true that bcps can make you gain weight by slowing up your metabolism, but if you are happy with the results on your skin and have no additional side effects, I would be cautious about going off it. Spiro without estrogen can cause irregular periods and most derms wont perscribe it to you without a bcp as well to control that. I take Diane 35 which causes me really abnormal bleeding but has imporved my skin somewhat. Despite the fact that I have been bleeding for three weeks of every month for three years, I stay on it because I don't want to know what will happen with my skin if I try and go off it. Recently my doctor perscribed me extra estrogen to stop the bleeding but it isn't really working (Its only been a month or so , so I'll still have to wait a bit and see) BUT, it made me gain weight! Like 15 pounds! If this estrogen doesn't stop the bleeding soon I'm really tempted to drop it and then I don't know what I'll do. I realize this probably doesn't help you at all, I just needed to vent too and I think perhaps my little story should make you feel lucky that you don't have any other problems with the bcp. I don't want to tell you to go on a diet or anything silly like that, but perhaps you should really consider other options before going off the yasmin. Good Luck.

Reply:i really dont know.i gained weight when i was on paxil.i lost weight on this spiro/prem but i have been working in 110 degree heat all summer long.i went from 178 to 159 lbs.even a few years ago i was at 145 lbs and when i was 34 i was put on med to gain weight.i was suppose to be anorexic but i just normally dont eat much.i never had problems dropping weight.even at 159 lbs and 5' 7'' people think im too skinny.

Im go to my Endo next Friday and Im going to ask if I can take Spiro, he asked if I was interested in Spiro on my last visit, and I dared to out.

Anyone Spiro at the moment? I did a search for Spiro and discovered that many people love this stuff . everyone hates this stuff?

Couple questions:
1. Get a first breakthrough? Was it bad? How long did it last?
2. possible side effects?
3. Can this medication long term?
4. How long did it take you to see improvement and what dosage are you?

thanks .

Sophie

Reply:Cushings is a pituitary disorder that causes an adrenal problem, but they think I also have congenital adrenal hyperplasia. So basically my pit tumor is secreting acth but cortisol is staying normal because of the CAH. But every other adrenal hormone and "adrenal metabolites" is elevated. So according to my endo, spiro will help me by lowering testosterone, but since the adrenal metabolites are still high it won't be perfect. Staying on topicals has helped make up for that.
The initial breakout wasn't bad at all, and like I said my skin was improving at the same time. It stopped after the first month (the same time I got on the pill and switched topicals).
Have you tried Vaniqa for the hair problem? I'm just starting it.
Do you have PCOS? I read spiro can help regulate your periods so they want doctors to prescribe it more instead of relying on metformin alone…

Reply:guy,

You're the best person for me to ask!! I have elevated dheas (androgens) which my endo says is probably from my adrenal glands and from my understanding, Cushing's is an adrenal gland disorder right??? What other meds are you on?

I just started Metformin for insulin resistance a few days ago and I'm breaking out a little from that. I'm already on Diane 35 which has kinda helped, I don't really know. My main concern now is my skin and I just started having facial hair problems a few months ago. So I guess you only broke out for a few days and it wasn't too bad right?
How is your skin doing these days?

thanks…
S.

Chyna Dawl: I don't have bad acne; mild I guess, a few pimples all the time, some days better some days worse. I've been on Diane35 for 6 weeks and I like it better than Ortho but I'm still getting pimples and it hasn't helped much with oil reduction. I have a problem with facial hair (don't have to shave yet but it's starting to get noticable) and my t-zone is SUPER oily…I can't use topicals because I have really sensitive skin; even cleanser make my skin red after I wash with them!!!

Reply:Get it!!! Yes I got an initial breakout but I've got Cushings Disease. I'm not the best person to ask. Going on the pill in month 2 helped even things out, or maybe it would have gone away on its own. At any rate I have crazy hormones altogether, not just testosterone…
Side effects: peeing a LOT the first two weeks; lost 12 pounds the first month and gained back about 4 or 5 with time; periods come closer together on 100mg/day but not 50mg/day.
Yep you can take it long term. My dermo wants me on it through my 30s as long as i'm not trying to get pregnant. I saw results I think within a week, besides the occasional zit for the initial breakout which is very unusual for me. Then again my skin was irritated from a new topical I was on…

Reply:Hello guy,

I was interested in taking Spiro too.
I have a dermatologist appointment October 29.
I hope other people post information about Spiro, because it seems like the best option for me right now.
I don't have severe acne, but I do have moderate acne.
I am using Clindoxyl, but it's a bit harsh on my skin. It makes it red and irritated. I also use Differin every second night – it doesn't seem to help things at all.
I have already used Accutane – it cleared my skin for only a year.
What's your current condition? Do you have moderate acne as well?

hi,
i started on spironolactone in October last year (started on 50 mg-100 mg to move in November) and I have not had your period since around the second week I was on Spiro.
Thank for you!

Reply:I've been on spiro for 2 months now, along with orthotricyclen. I'm taking 2 100mg pills each day and it hasn't worked at all. Just for those of you who want to know lol!

Reply:Well i'd say so yes.You can be on it without but they recommend you to because it regulates your periods.

Reply:well, i was taking it along with antibiotics and a topical cream. it helped clear my skin a little, but not much, which is why i am going to acutane next month.
I'm not on birth control with spiro…should i have been to help regulate my cycle?

Reply:Did you take a birth control pill along with the spiro? That's meant to regulate your period while on it and it's recommended to take a BC pill along with it.

Can i ask,did the spiro clear your skin at all?50-100mg seems quite a low dose.

This is a long shot, but in addition to Spiro and Yasmin Im taking these pills Aloe u0026 Vitamin E, as requested by my doctor for an unrelated reason. The pills are 50 IU per 500 mg of E and Aloe each. I take 6 per day. Does anyone know if these pills could be contributing to my acne? It is particularly worse than usual the last few months and Im wondering if its more than just the Yasmin. Large quantities of e a help or a hindrance?

those spiro, have you lost weight? Im losing weight and I think it is due to the spiro. all comments would be appreciated.

Reply:i've lost weight too, about 5 lbs. it is, as sweetjade mentioned, just water loss, which we will all regain when we stop spiro. however, if it's bothering you, going down to 75 ought to help. you're still at a moderate dose so hopefully you won't lose the anti-acne effects. good luck,
guy

Reply:LOL, yup. I was so depressed my freshman year of college cuz I lost 10 lbs of WATER weight OK, I wasn't that depressed just sad cuz I couldn't wear certain pants anymore (still can't), but as long as you are taking spiro (it's a diuretic among other things), and I was already underwieght, you probably won't be bloated or maintain much water weight. Isnt that kinda good

i just don't know if it's good to loose weight that way. i like the weight i am and i don't want to loose anymore. i think i'm going to lower my dose from 100mg to 75mg just to see if i can maintain. at least i know it's normal to be losing while on the spiro and that others go thru it too.

Reply:for those taking spiro, have you lost weight? i have been losing weight and i think it's because of the spiro. any responses would be appreciated.
