I do not know if Im allergic or something, but I seem to get little bumps or what on my face. This St. Ives Clear Pore Cleanser that I can use the problem as it was the only one Im currently using. Salicylic acid seems to break out of my skin. What can I do? Help?

Reply:I'm experiencing the same thing.

I've been using the aspirin mask for the past few days (aspirin has a high concentration of salicyic acid), and I'm breaking out more so than usual.

Numerous people have posted great reviews of the aspirin mask, but I've yet to enjoy similar results  .

Hopefully, this intial breakout means that the impurities are surfacing and that my face will clear up soon.

I return to school next week, and I'm praying, pleading, imploring, beseeching the good Lord  that my face will clear.

Waterlily, did you intially break out as well? If so, how long after did your face settle down and began to clear?

Reply:It can just be purging – the salicylic acid brings out the gunk from your skin. It should stop in 2-3 weeks and then your skin will look much better. Hang in there.

Reply:Does anyone know about this new product called Clenia?

Reply:I read in the Self Magazine (Jan 06) that all this seasonal dryness/lack of humidity causes pores to block and break out. It recommended you use a moisturizer with SA.

It probably doesn't help you much, but I only get bacne breakouts in the winter and could never understand why. (So, dermatologists are useless and a magazine answered my question).

Reply:You're skin might be too dry. Maybe you are washing your face too many times (you should never wash your face more than twice a day) or maybe you are using another medication and it's just too much for your sensitive skin.

Or maybe your skin does not respond well to salicylic acid. I used to get a lot of bumps when I used benzoyl peroxide b/c my skin could not take it.

Reply:Stop using it. It took me years to realize that no matter what kinda cleanser Im using, if it has SA, it will break me out worse and give me nasty red marks and make my skin all blotchy looking. Try using a gentle cleanser like Cetaphil or if you live in Canada, Spectrojel.

Well, after seven years of suffering with acne, my face is almost entirely clear and I owe it all to St Ives apricot scrub medicated. yes it feels when you rub your face with sand, and yes everyone has said will iritate my face anymore, but it works ! Ive always suspected that the dead cells was the main reason I broke off a piece, and after using Cleaersil Acne Defense Cleanser, which causes dead skin cells back to a lesser extent, that I knew this St Ives scrub may be the key to greatness. Now do you think the other procducts I also use help: Multi Neatragena Vitguyin treatment of acne, Zapzyt Gel (BP 10 best), clean and bright and Dual Action Moisturizer. im soo happy hardcore im almost rid of acne! anyone else want to comment on St Ives stuff or something else?

Reply:I have extremely sensitive skin and guy allergic to almost everything.

While I have never used the medicated st. ives apricot, i have used the regular.

It has never done any dguyage to my skin in the several years I have been using it. It didnt save me from breakouts, but it definitely didnt seem to make it any worse.

Just a note….the medicated may be a bit harsher. But dont scrub too hard. Definitely!!! And dont use it if you have been out in the sun too long….what a mess that will create.

Good luck!! We are all different so this board may lead us on to that particular thing that will work for us!!

Reply:I think you have to be very careful with scrubs because your skin almost alwasy loks and feels better the first couple of times you use them, but watch out later on! It is also important to be careful if you are using any other exfoliating treatments like bha or aha-or any product or medication that makes your skin photosensitive. I guy using Freeman's scrub right now-it has small particles (for those of you looking for gentle scrubs-check the ingredients and see if they say polyethelene-thats the plastic that makes really gentle scrub particles ) but I may stop because it seems my skin is getting very oily from it. Whoever lets the medicated scrub sit on their face a minute or longer has the right idea-otherwise the medication in the scrub is pointeless because it has no chance to work since it is washed away. BP and salicylic acid need to be absorbed by the skin in order to work.

Reply:i used the regular non-medicated st ives for about 6 months and it worked a treat. then i noticed my face getting a bit redder but i still carried on then one day i got a tonne of tiny weeny (but very many) bumps all over my forehead and the oil production was just crazy! so i cguye off it and used an organic natural cleanser and toner by Green People and now my skins just about back to normal. was really annoyed cos it was working until then!

Reply:I think im gonna go back to using pHisoderm, sensitive formula.. it worked for me.

Reply:I think St. Ives is an ok product. It's no miracle acne break through, but i do admit it is better than most commerical acne cleansers out there. However the product can be very harsh on sensitive skin, so if you still want all the effects without the irration you should probably try the one that isn't for acne prone &guyp; medicated treatment. I'm pretty sure you've seen it before next to the white one. My friend use's the one in a small tub container. He's had acne ever since high school, probably the worst skin of all the people, but know he has the clearest. I guess he eventually beat acne. So check that one out. You'll notice it in a tub like container. But probably stay away from the medicated one. PEaCE

Reply:PS- It works better if you just smooth it on your skin, let it sit abit, then wash it off. DO NOT rub it into your skin. Washing it off will 'scrub' enough.

Reply:I've been using it several days and my skin is almost clear. I've had no breakouts at all. I think it's worth it to at least try it. It works well!

Reply:Yikes, maybe I'll wait on buying the product!

Reply:I had heard that the scrubbers in the scrub cause tiny abraisions in the skin, which provide the acne-causing bacteria a place to live, thus causing MORE ZITS in the future. I used to break out all of the time while I used the product! Now, I just add a teaspoon of baking soda to my cleanser(for a natural, non abrasive exfoliator) It works!!!!!!!!!!(and it's cheap!)

Reply:Thank you all for posting your results! I guy going to buy the St. Ives (oily and acne prone) scrub tomorrow. I will keep you all posted on my progress once I've used it for about a week. I have moderate acne and scars. I have tryed tons of products (Proactiv, Differin, Retin A, 5% BP gel, different types of vitguyins, medications including Accutane, etc.) and nothing has cleared my skin. I hope this works. Have a great day!

Reply:Me too. Just after using it last night, my skin looks totally different today. It's smooth and brighter. It's great!

Reply:This stuff really does work, in two days I noticed a difference! I'm so glad I bought this!

Reply:I just started using the regular St. Ives and I LOVE it! Keep in mind, my skin is very ultra sensitive. I was really afraid I'd get a rash, or swell, or breakout or something. I didn't AT ALL! I think it's great. If you just gently smooth it over your skin instead of rubbing, it's perfectly fine.

Reply:I've tried the St. Ive's ultra sensitive and I still recommend the Aveeno scrub compared to it

Reply:how do you use it? do you rub it all over your face, because you can't do that in 30 seconds.

Reply:what about the ULTRA SENSITIVE one? that good enough??

Reply:The St. Ives medicated apricot scrub contains an irritating cleansing agent, and also contains lanolin oil, making it a problem for oily or blemish-prone skin.

Reply:I'm glad that St. Ive's is working out for you- but I have a suggestion for anyone whose skin is too sensitive for that. I found that the little beads in that were too large and too abrasive for my skin. I also don't like to wash wash my skin with medicated stuff. A really good exfoliater that I use is Aveeno Skin Brightening Daily Scrub. Its beads are much smaller, kind of like the Proactiv Scrub but without any BP or SA. Its mild enough that I can use it every night and it really clears off all of the dead skin cells and it feels great!

Reply:Sorry. I also use the medicated kind in the tube. I've found that it lasts quite a while (I've had my tube about 2.5 months) and it really does work well.

Reply:I have used the medicated scrub for over 3 years now and love it. A lot of people say it is too harsh but for my skin it works great. I have only seen it in a tube but it is really cheap and is guyazing.

Reply:guy, did you also use the medicated type? Does it come in the sguye "Tub" as the regular kind? Or is it in a tube?

Reply:I'm a newbie, but I had to jump in on this……this stuff is guyazing. "Professionals" will tell you not to use it…..that's it's too rough. But I'm telling you, as long as you control yourself (don't act like you're sandblasting your face) and let it sit on your face for about 30 seconds, it's wonderful!!!

Reply:Thanks, I'll buy the medicated type next time I go to the store.

Reply:the active ingredient is salicilic acid i think 2 %. it works really well!!! the secret is that it exfoliates AND used the acid to help out even more. i use it twice a day and it works great, drying at first but use a moisturizer. the tube says "for oily or acne prone skin"

Reply:Medicated appricot scrub? Can you list the active ingredients? I've used st ives appricot scrub, just don't know if it was medicated.

Reply:my derm told me long ago to use ivory soap because it's pure and the best for acne prone skin. it is drying so don't overdo it, i've used it for 10 years now and love it and rarely get pimples now. good luck!

I use St. Ives Gentle Scrub (NOT the medical ONE) and its just another exfoliator. Is it safe to use on my face every other night, or is that too much? Every night too much?

Reply:I love this board!

I stopped doing esthetics for over 1 year now…Had a baby…..And was wondering how can I stay productive….

Exfoliiation is different for everyone. They have mild products with small particles such a Jojoba beads(several products), walnut shells(several products), peach pit beads(St Ives)..you name it… and some more invasive ingredients such as Glycolic acid. Which you need to really be careful of….
Have you read some of the posts about Glycolic acid and abusing it? OUCH!

How often do you exfolliate? Not everyday that's for sure…..You will over stimulate your skin. If you have oily skin….you will dry it so that more oil will need to be produced..Then your new problem may be VERY oily skin…And this may not happen right away. You may look in the mirror and say…wow! My skin is tighter, my pores have tightened up! If I do this everyday just think of how good my skin will be! we'll youmay be surprised with more problems later! Beware!

1-3 times a week is enough. Trust me..Too many of my clients abused..and had worse than what they came in with….

Why do we exfolliate? To allow new cell production, to remove surface blackheads…and debris from pores. To have better results in using moisturizers..better absorbtion…Even to brighten our skin. Microdermabrasion can even reduce fine lines.

Exfolliation is a good thing…Our skin does this naturarly every 28 days or so. Skin changes all the time. That's why one day a product works great and one month later…it doesn't.

Exfolliation will NOT age your skin…. But drying it out may make you look aged…but you wont age from this process…..Just irritate it more agressively. Tearing the skin? Unless you plan on using a buff puff with apricot scrub..highly unlikely. You will irriate your pores though. How does that happen? More exfolliation+more oil produced= more debris in pores which can make them enlarged. Thus making you pick the contents out…and that is more than you bargained for right?

The environment will age your skin… free radicals..sun too much of it….balanced diet lack of..not enough water….heriditary reasons too….

Be careful there is no MIRACLE cure..It takes time and wanting to make things happen today..we'll Heck I want that too!
Let me know when that day comes! Cause I am in!

Reply:I do it once a week on Sunday. If I do it too much, it messes my face up. I use St. Ives regular scrub.

Me.

Reply:Ok, thanks. I don't want to damage my face.

But, let's say that I exfoliated every night versus two times a week. Would the healing process for red marks go faster if I did it every night? Or would it be pretty much the same if I did it twice a week?

Reply:Too much exfoliation can cause the skin to become dry which will make the skin age faster. It can also cause tiny tears in the skin and cause irritation. For most people 1-3 times a week is enough exfoliation. Using something with glycolic acid in it will be better for your skin than the scrubbing beads, because it won't cause tears in the skin and is less likely do dry it out or damage it.

Reply:I'm not scared of the irritation, I'm scared that my skin will age faster. I've heard a lot of people say that even guys' skin can age a lot faster from exfoliation. I'm a guy, 16 years old–should I even be concerened about it?

Reply:I don't use the St. Ives scrub, but I use the Olay gentle exfoliating scrub every morning and night. I also use the Loreal Micro-dermabrasion every morning also. It doesn't irritate my skin. So, I think you should be ok every day but if it gets to be too irritating I would stop and decrease how often you do it.

First, I was wondering if anyone can give me some feedback about these things please. Ive heard mixed reviews. Anyway, I was wondering if I suppose to wash my face and then after using this? And then after the exfoliating scrub sheet thing, can I present (BP)? Thanks everyone.

Reply:hi. Ive been using these st ives sheets for a while now and I must say, its BAD ASS!!! I like the feeling afterwards, it makes my skin nice and dry(cause Im mad oily) and tight. Most of my acne is gone, just marks and everyone who posts in this site says that exfoliating is good for marks. But yea, to me, its good stuff.

Reply:Don't bother with these. Delicate skin like ours cannot benefit from these in my opinion. Gentle is always better. I used them briefly, and ditched them rather quickly. Threw out their delicate wash with the scrubbies too. Hope this helps.

Reply:I believe you just use the cloth in place of your cleanser. At least, that's how it worked with their Apricot Medicated scrub. I guess it depends on whether or not you wear make-up or other variables. Just try both ways and see which works best.

Does work?

Does clean and clear continuous control acne Clenser work?

And someone does not Natures Cure worked for them Ive used it and it didnt help !

Powerful Prayers to St. Joseph
Reply:I have tried Nature's Cure, it did nothing for me, luckily it wasn't expensive.

St. Ive's Medicated Scrub- I found the exfoliating beads to be too big and it hurt. I think I was doing more bad than good using it. Once a week I do use it though, I use less than a pea size.

Also, on a different note: Baking Soda and water to exfoliate skin, horrible idea for me at least. It burned so bad when I used it once. It's just like throwing salt on wounds.

And here is a new product that you may or may not have tried, Oil-Free Acne Wash. It works really well, at first it tends to dry your skin out, but if you moisturize and continue using it, the results are good.

My mom uses that St. Ives medicated apricot stuff and she really likes it. I have used Clean and Clear products before and they did not work for me but Proactiv does… :> )

Natural Soap Making Secrets
Reply:lemon juice is the best. totally removes all dead skin. just put it on your face, wash your hands and the rinse it off. it makes your skin really smooth.

Powerful Prayers to St. Joseph
Reply:Hey Niko,
I would like to give you advice, but i'm having a bad skin month and feel like i have nothing to recommend. I will say that I have been told by many derms and estheticians that st. ives apricot is too harsh, unless you barely scrub. i used that product for years and finally realized that scrubbing my skin only made matters worse. right now i'm using proactive. and i still need to be careful not to scrub too hard. proactive used to work great for me like 3 years ago. lately, it's not doing much at all!
you mentioned that your red marks are fading fast, how so? what do you think is making that happen? i've got some to fade nad they've been there for months!
Thanks for your help and good luck!
