Ok . So Im finally deciding to go to a derm to find a way to blackheads outta my pores. I hear a lot about Accutane and Retin-A. Im not really that much pimples. Only the black and whiteheads. Which of the two rules that would best help the problem?

Reply:Retin-A-Micro Gel helps with blackheads even more than Retin-A.

Reply:Accutane kills the bacteria that cause clogged pores to become inflamed, and retinols help prevent them from clogging. If your blackheads are just blackheads and aren't inflamed, Accutane won't do anything for you, so I'd go with the Retin-A.

Reply:Retin A or Retin Micro would probably help u best. Accutane is more generally used for people with moderate to severe acne. I starting breaking out when I was around 11 or 12, and by the time I was 21, it was getting worse. I used accutane for about about 6 or 7 months, and have been break out free and I am 26 now. I would recommend the Retin-A first though. Some people have good experiences with that alone.

Good luck

Reply:Neutrogena On-the-Spot cured my acne. I still use the stuff and still have clear skin. I recommend it to anyone who has not tried it.

As for whiteheads, a cornmeal mask got rid of mine. Sounds weird I know, but its homemade, cheap, and effective!

Im so happy I found my main cause cystic acne. My face is AWESOME. And cysts are rare and short now. My thing was cheese. Especially melted cheese. I tell you it does suck, but suck more cysts. And it took me so long to figure out why I had cysts all the time, and ate cheese every day, now I know why. : Dunno if P

I as this for everyone, but give up cheese for a while and see if it is your primary cause. Now I got a few lil whiteheads (i pop em) so redmarks are still, but now cysts are rare. Instead, daily breakouts.

THIS GRRREAT IS! : D

I no longer drink milk, yogurt, and drink no milk left in cereals.

Reply:I agree, CHEESE IS EVIL. man I was in love with dairy, and just now I realized it's one of the main reasons why I keep breaking out.
I am never drinking milk.

Reply:Also, have you ever tried rice milk? Rice Dream brand is the most amazing 'milk' – its so creamy and white its just like the real thing!! You could also try soy milk – in particular 'Silk' brand – though rice milk is definately more like real milk than soy milk. (but soy milk has more protein) Neither have ANY dairy whatsoever and shouldn't break you ought.

Reply:Congratulations!!! I'm not sure if you're aware, but there are numerous non dairy cheeses out there that are really good – you ought to check your local healthfood store. I eat a 'cheese' made from brown rice (weird, i know!) but it tastes just like cheese!! I even had a colleague taste it and they thought it was cheese. The brand is (i think) Soyco – in a light blue packaging – but I think they're the only ones who make a brown rice cheese.

Anyway, just wanted to let you know that you don't have to give up the texture or taste of cheese just because dairy breaks you out.

As I read these boards, people are uncertain about what type of acne. The first step is to figure out what kind of acne you have, and to understand. Here are the different types of acne can be increased have.

Whiteheads follicles under the surface of the skin that appear on the surface as small whitish bumps.

Blackheads be enlarged hair follicles that erupt on the surface of the skin and black. The color is not due to his dirt.

Papules folliculitis appearing on the skin as a small, pink bumps that may be offered are pus-filled areas surrounding touch.

Pimples follicles.

Nodules are large, painful, recurring inflammation around a hair follicle skin.

Cysts deep into the deep, inflamed, pus-filled infection around the follicle that pain and scarring may result. (When folded, blood on the surface)

Whatever you do, do not pick up one of these, or are pop.

Reply:Looks like I have/had every kind lol! The cysts and nodules are gone since I stopped using medicated cleansers. :p

Reply:Its hard for us not to pop them, because having pimples is bad enough – but having bit puss'y white ones is just going too far. I sure dont have enough confidence to walk around in public knowing i have a huge ugly pimple on my face…

I never used to get, but in the last few months I have these whiteheads that seriously got about one month to leave. sometimes they are lit, sometimes they are not so bad, but I do not understand why they will not go away? Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas? Ive been using tea tree oil and 10% bp, sea salt, I tried but it does not help. In the past Ive always wanted things to go away in a week or less so I do not understand whats going on.

Reply:I went to the dermatologist for the first time in 6 months today.

I made an appointment because I have the same symptoms as you… deep clogged pores on my chin. It's something that I never had to deal with before.

My doctor told me my hormones are changing and they are creating "bad oil" that bacteria feeds off of. I feel like a grown up (I'm 22) that has never grown out of puberty. Actually that doesn't even make sense because I didn't have acne when I was going through puberty or in my teens. Just a pimple every other month.

I was on Erythromycin and Desonide lotion, but now that I have developed a different type of acne, he told me to stop using them. He prescribed me:

-Tretinoin 0.025% (he said Retin-A-Micro would be too strong for me.)
-Adoxa (doxycycline tablets to kill bacteria)
-Triaz (3% benzoyl peroxided pads)

Try talking to your derm about these RX and see if they will work for you. I will keep you updated….

Reply:you're talking about whiteheads as in the clogged pores .. little white bump type dealio right??… because everyone seems to have a different interpretation of a whitehead? (so if you are actually talking about like a pimple with a whitehead on it, then this is a big waste of time to read because its going to be about the clogged pores) i get those damn things , like a ton of them on my chin and forehead. That's my problem because for some reason a bunch will get inflammed and become one huge stupid pimple.. and that's my source of pimples so ya i wish i could get ride of these suckers already, and for good.!

My doctor gave me tretinoin gel (steivamycin) (sp?) ! Tretinoin helps shed your layers of skin and brings up all the bumps that will eventually come up (purging) and then it's supposed to unclog the whiteheads and all that good stuff. I've been using it for about 3 1/2 weeks and it definitely brought all that @#$% up to the surface .. but i think (i'm hoping) now that i'm actually going to start seeing a difference! this morning actually seemed to look better (knock on wood) so yea to get to the whole point, i would recommend a tretinoin, but u will go through a purging period most likely (the whole "it's going to get worse before it gets better) but i think if u stick with it, that it will definitely be worth it in the end!!! So anything like retin-a, retin-a micro (they come in different strengths for the type of acne ur dealing with), steivamycin (sp), differin (is supposed to be easier on the skin).. and theres a few more out there! i also just started taking spiro a week ago and i've been taking diane 35 for 4 months (i'm hoping those will kick in soon so that i will stop getting the whiteheads to begin with)! you could definitely also try something like those or similar that will block your androgens and make you not produce so much oil, because that's what gets overproduced and mixes with your dead skin cells to clog the pores and produce the damn whitehead in the first place!!

I hate having acne. I never in my life thought I would get something like this. I had flawless skin until the age of 20. I do not understand why this is happening to me. I cry as I write this, because not to sound conceited but I have a beautiful face and Ive always valued myself on my appearance. It is so difficult now, because all the scars and red marks are destroying me. I do not have terrible acne, but I have many pimples on my chin and forehead. Mostly whiteheads sometimes cysts. I pray every night it will go away and wake up every morning and its still there. I do everything exactly right the derm says. But I do not know if Ill be stuck with this forever. I hate seeing people I have not seen in awhile because they remember my face in high school and it was perfect. Now it looks terrible. I used to love to party and have fun with my friends, but now my acne has a somber, introverted *****. I hate to think of the mean things people say behind my back, because I know people talk about. The person I feel most sorry is not even myself. It is my friend and my family. On my bad days, I mope around and take my anger and grief on them. I just want to be back to my old self. Maybe one day Ill crawl out of this deep, dark hole that has brought me acne? Sorry for writing so much I just had to get this look.

Reply:Hey babygirl~ I understand exactly how you are feeling and we always ask "why me?", but sometimes we just need to relax. Stressing doesnt help one bit, and feeling sorry for ourselves doesnt either. I know its just a natural reaction, because everytime we look in the mirror we want to cry. It's so hard to deal with acne and physical problems especially now-a-days when beauty and perfection is a must. You cant look on the television without seeing beautiful people with beautiful skin. My main problem isnt full blown acne, but my skin is never perfect..NEVER. I always think…"oh i would be so beautiful if my skin was flawless or at least normal".
Just know that people care about you and that you will get through it. and chances are the people that you are moody to, understand and love you know matter what.
Good luck

Reply:BabyGirl – Wow I read your story and I can totally relate. I started getting very, very, mild acne around age 15. It slowly got worse though around age 16, and at age 17 I went on Accutane – cleared me up PERFECTLY!! Now I am a 20 year old college student and I am having to deal with mild acne again along with slight scars, red marks, bad tone, oiliness and large pores. Like you, I had always thought I was pretty attractive. I like everything about my facial features and I couldn't be happier with my body… but my SKIN! AURGH!! I always think, "If only my skin would be better I would be so much happier." (Which I know is not a good mindset, but I can't help but think it.)

Every girl I hang around has perfect skin – the kind of skin where they dont have to wear ANY makeup and they still have porcelain china doll skin. It makes me so jealous!!! I hate having to spend so much time slathering on foundation, concealer, bronzer and powder every time I want to step outside the apartment. I wish I could have the kind of skin where I could just go run errands, go to class, be outside, go swimming, etc. and not have to worry about my skin or my makeup getting smudged.

I feel like I am going on my own rant now, but what I am trying to say is that you are not alone in this!! Acne sucks, but there is light at the end of the tunnel. Right now I am taking Acidophilus and Milk Thistle supplements, spironolactone, and I am drinking POMWonderful Pomegranate juice for the antioxidant support. This combination seems to be working well. I am also getting microdermabrasion treatments with a regimine of Renova and Neostrata. (WHEW!!) Things seemed to be bleak at the beginning of all this, but now my regimine seems to be coming together and my skin is looking better.

Basically, keep the faith that there IS a regimine out there that will work for you. Also, someone recently told me something that was sort of a "lightbulb" moment for me. I was complaining about my skin (as always), and they said, "Hey – you don't like your skin and that upsets you. Well there are tons of people with perfect skin that have other problems – whether it be physically, emotionally, sociallly, etc… so just focus on the good and know that no one is perfect." This thought really helped me for some reason, hope it will help you as well. Good luck, and don't get discouraged! Everyone on this board has proven to be a great support line and all really do care!

Reply:Your very welcome- takecare & anytime you want to talk then there are always some great people here whp are always willing to listen & help.
Best Wishes

Reply:Thank you so much for replying. It really makes me feel alot better. It is good to know there are still good people in the world that care about others.

Reply:For The Record I Do Have Acne Also, Actually

Reply:babygirl, you are in good company here. so many of us are in your boat, surrounded by people who seem to not have any problems with their skin, completely oblivious to how consumed we are by ours. all the advice from people who have no idea what they're talking about simply b/c they've never had what we have. i too had a lovely face until i was about 22, then all of a sudden, literally overnight i started getting all these huge pimples and within about a week i was covered, just my face. it took me about a year to get to a derm and luckily he was able to clear me up for a few years, but still i'm here, almost ten years later on accutane, hoping it will be the final solution. so far, so good, but it's been a long, hard journey getting here. you'll find what works for you, don't despair, don't give up, and never, ever lose sight of your true beauty, the beauty that a few, or a few hundred, pimples could never hide.

btw, have you tried the lemon juice thing? it helped me within a few days when my cysts were at their disgustingly worst, and they were so bad! as wide as my thumb, and as long as my finger, all along my jaw. why do they like it there so much? anyhoo, it goes like this: the juice of one lemon in water or herbal tea, every day. has to be a fresh, fruity lemon, not the bottled juice. there's a whole thread with the reasoning behind this, but it worked for me. i don't do it every day anymore, but monthly, when things are getting outta hand i just do the lemon thing and problems seem to go away in day or two. good luck babygirl, and take care of yourself. ali

Reply:I understand that this what you going through must be horrible. But its important that you know that true friends wont think anything of you just because you have acne & if they do then they are not true friends.
Your boyfriend & family- well im sure they understand your reasons for sometimes being alittle moody with them, so there is no need to worry about that.
What you have to remember is the outside appearence can change, but the inside of a person never changes with that & you are still beautiful to your boyfriend & others because its still you- your still there.
Take care

Reply:No, don't do that.

Just wash the area and your hands with soap, then gently scrape the top of the whitehead with your nail, then push down on both sides of it so it all will come out. Wipe it with a tissue and then put some tea tree oil on it to kill the bacteria.

Reply:I've heard of people putting scotch tape on their face to get rid of blackheads, but I don?t think I would ever put tape on my face (that?s just my opinion). I think it would just irritate it. The pain should go away once it pops.

Ok, I got some weird chest acne. Yes, I know it because my acne dermatologist confirmed. I am a man, no pill Will affect me.

The acne covers basically all of my nipples at the bottom of my neck. They are not whiteheads or blackheads, or cysts. They are quite small and they are just red. They are almost completely inflamed. But it is quite thick and is not serious, but it is moderate.

Im now Clyndamicin twice a day (anti-biotic) and 0.1% Cream Differn. Ive tried using Retin-A 0.1% and 0.1% Differn, but both just made it red and raw. Is there anything that could help?

Accutane is not an option. Ive heard that Nutrogena a kind of body wash, but Ive seen 2-3 different kinds. What should I get? Or is there something else you would recommend?

Reply:I have never had severe chest or back acne. I actually only have break outs when I use certain shampoos or conditioners. You may want to look into the types of hair products you are using. Prolonged use of Pantene conditioner does it to me everytime!

I like the Neutrogena clean and clear body wash. This helped control the breakouts but after I stopped using Pantene (regularly) I stopped breaking out. I actually haven't had a problem since. I have also read on this board that Head and Shoulders works. I'm not sure if it does or not as I have tried it but it usually irritates my skin after a couple of uses. I have heard it said that all you have to do is wash your hair with it and the residue that runs over your chest and back will clear you up. I'm not sure if you clear up because of the ingredients in the Head and Shoulders or if the old product you were using was the culprit and since you quit using it you quit breaking out.

Hope this helps a little!

Good luck

Reply:I've had the exact same problem as you. I don't really know what cleared it up but it somehow went away. I've been using Neutrogena's Body Clear Body Scrub and it's seem to have helped a little, but it's still there. Of course it took me at least a couple weeks to see any real results.

I've been pretty desperate just to get rid of it, I'd try anything

Reply:BabyGirl2005, i have now been on doxycycline for about three weeks, however i am not really seeing any results…how long after taking it did you start to see change??

Reply:Yes I have been very worried about it! haha. Well when you have been clear for 2 years you don't want to go back ya know? It is so great to have clear skin I mean you can enjoy life so much more. Anyway I would love to go on another antibiotic but my derm. won't let me because he said I wasn't a long term antibiotic candidate because of my constant yeast infections. Ugh! My derm. is a jerk too I am gonna look for another one. I am gonna try not working out with any make up on for a week and see if it gets better. If not and it gets worse then I am gonna find a new derm.!

Reply:I wouldn't workout with your makeup. I don't know if that is what's causing it but it really could be. Be/c they eer tell you, you should wash your face after working out. I know that you are very worried about your acne coming back so I was thinking that maybe you should go talk to your derm and see if maybe he thinks it would be ok to put you on some other kind of antibiotic.
