Tazorac in Acne Treatment

Tazorac is a topical medication (available in cream and gel form) used in acne treatment and psoriasis. It is a brand name of Tazarotene. Tazorac fights skin diseases like whiteheads, blackheads, red pimples, and pimple containing pus. But, it is very important to consult a doctor or dermatologist before you start using Tazorac.

Tazarotene, Tretinoin (the brand names are Retin-A, Renova and Avita) and Adaplene (the brand names is Differin) are popular retinoids (vitamin A derivatives) that are used widely to treat acne. Let’s compare Tazarotene and the two other retinoids in treating acne:

Tazarotene VS Tretinoin
Studies have found that Tazarotene is more effective than Tretinoin. Though both were found to be of about same effectiveness in treatment of inflammatory acne, Tazarotene reduced non-inflammatory acne much better than Tretinoin.

Tazarotene VS Adapalene
Some studies have concluded that Tazarotene is more effective than adapalene in treatment of both inflammatory and noninflammatory acne. The effects of dryness were higher in Tazarotene in the beginning but after three months, Tazarotene was very well tolerated. Adaplene produced less irritating effects in the beginning but treatment was also less effective than Tazarotene.

Tazarotene renews the skin by increasing the cell turnover, but may cause dryness and skin irritation. It is meant for external application, therefore contact with eyes, mouth should be avoided. A thin layer of Tazorac should be applied once in a day. The usage of Tazorac should be avoided by breastfeeding mothers and women with child bearing potential (pregnant women).

There are side effects from the application of Tazorac cream in certain patients, they are include stinging, peeling, itching, outbreaks and increased sensitivity of the skin to sunlight. Therefore, sun exposure should be kept limited while using Tazorac. If just in case you might experience such side effects, please consult your doctor immediately.
